1776
In July, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. At the next session of the General Assembly of Connecticut meeting on October 10, 1776, ratified the Declaration and enacted a new statute against treason making it a crime to levy open war against the state or USA, to enlist in the enemy's army or persuade others to enlist, to correspond with or carry intelligence to the enemy of the state, etc., which carried the punishment of death. In the case of resolute loyalists who fled the state, their wives and children were usually accorded considerate treatment and were frequently aided in joining the fugitives.

1778
In May 1778, an act was passed by which all estates, real and personal, lying and being within the state of Connecticut which belong to any person or persons who have voluntarily gone over to and joined with the enemy shall be forfeited to and for the use of the state.
