Isaac died testate on 01 February 1831.At a Court of Probate held at Norwalk on February 4, 1831, the last will and testament of Isaac Selleck of New Canaan was presented by the Executors. The Court did approve and accept his Will and Sanford Selleck & Noah Selleck executors accepted the trust and gave bond.
At the same Court in Norwalk creditors were given six months to exhibit their claims. The Court also appointed Nehimiah Lockwood & David Bortwick, both of New Canaan, to inventory and appraise the estate of Isaac Selleck. The result of the inventory:
The executors agreed on March 22, 1831, that the following was a "true and perfect" inventory of the estate.
The buildings & half acre of land given to his Widow appraised at 350.00 98 acres of land 1900.00 2250.00 Amount of Personal estate appraised at 350.32 whole amount $2600.32 Nehimiah Lockwood
Daniel BortwickIn court at Norwalk on March 21, 1831, Sarah Selleck, Sanford Selleck, Noah Selleck and Isaac Selleck indicated that they were the only persons interested in the division of the estate, and that they had mutually agreed upon a division of the estate.
This agreement was signed and sealed by Sanford Selleck, Noah Selleck, Isaac Selleck and Sarah Selleck at New Canaan on June 15, 1831, before Samuel Raymond, Justice of Peace.
At a Court of Probate held at Norwalk on June 17, 1831, the distribution of Isaac Selleck's estate by the executors was approved by the court. Benjamin Isaacs was the judge.
(The will of Isaac Selleck, inventory and distribution are found on FHC film #0004996, Connecticut, Probate Court (Norwalk District), Probate Records 1830-1836, Volume 5, on pages 20, 26 and 37 respectively.)
The will of Isaac Selleck named daughters Elizabeth Slauson, Mahitable Brown, and Nancy Selleck along with sons Sanford Selleck, Noah Selleck & Isaac G. Selleck. There was no mention in the will of a daughter Polly nor of a son James Selleck who was living near Austinburg, Ohio, at the time of the will. The first published reference to Isaac's daughter Polly was by Rev. Charles M. Selleck in his book Norwalk (1897) who wrote that she first married a William Seeley and second a Mr. Babcock. Of interest is that Rev. Selleck did not mention Isaac's son Sanford. Henry S. Gorham in his 1938 unpublished typescript Bates, Selleck and Allied Families of Stamford, Norwalk and Fairfield, Connecticut repeated the information about Polly but added nothing new about her.
There is evidence in the 1790 and 1800 census records of a female child who could be Polly. The probation records associated with the will of Noah Selleck refers to Lucetta and Andrew Seeley (also spelled Seely) and Catharine Quinn Reed and Lucy M. Quinn Long as known living heirs of Noah Selleck. Also mentioned in these probation records is a Mary Quinn, who is said to have been a sister of Noah's and to have died about 1886. The lack of success so far in finding more about Mary "Polly" Selleck Seeley Babcock Quinn has made her a very elusive person.
That a son James Selleck, who also was not mentioned in Isaac's will but referred to by Rev. Selleck and Henry Gorham, existed and was the James Selleck, Sr. living in Ashtabula County, Ohio, at the time of the will has ample support. Letters from James' daughters Mary Selleck Blakeslee in 1867 and Lucy Selleck in April 1868 to their brother James Selleck, Jr. make the family connection. David Selleck, a brother of Mary, Lucy and James, Jr., wrote in his biographical sketch that appeared in the 1891 History of Harrison County, Iowa that as a young man he clerked for an Uncle in New York for two years. This uncle surely was Noah Selleck who was a New York City merchant at that time.
A map of "The Lost District" of Dantown about 1915 showing the location of roads, homes and an outline of Laurel reservoir. This is the area northwest of New Canaan where Isaac Selleck lived and were James Selleck, Sr. was born. The upper right hand corner of the map shows the Selleck Corners Methodist church and cemetery. The Dantown Methodist church and cemetery are located in the upper center of the map. The date on the cemetery is 1752. This is the cemetery were Isaac and Sarah Selleck are buried. "Ye 8 Mile Line," is the boundry between the states of Connecticut and New York established in 1686.
