Advising Evaluation
In the fall 2002, the FHSU Advising
Evaluation went online. The Academic Advising Committee is currently
working on a plan for informing faculty and students as well as
evaluation for graduate students. If you would like to see the format
that students access from their SWS accounts, you can click on this
link to take a look:

Associate of General Studies
The Associate of General Studies Program at FHSU
was approved by the Kansas Board of Regents on February 2002. The
60 hour program is grounded with 36 hours of general education,
12 hours of electives and a 12 hour emphasis. In addition, the AGS
was developed to fit into any bachelor’s degree program at
our institution.
AGS students are advised in the Academic Advising and Career Exploration
Center. For more information, please visit the Associate
of General Studies website.

Career Exploration

WHAT
IS HOT? The Academic Advising and Career
Exploration Center (AACE) at Fort Hays State University. With the
fall semester in full swing, the students at Fort Hays are finding
out what the AACE center can do for them. Career Exploration is
cooking like “hot cakes”
with new ideas, new resources, and new directions for students
to explore majors and help the undeclared students decide on a major.
One of the newest editions is the implementation of the
DISCOVER interest inventory.
This inventory used to be administered only through a centers desktop
computer in their offices. Now they have updated information, added
new features, and students can use it 24/7 on-line. Hot!
So Hot!!
To start the process, students
need to call our office at 785-628-5577 and set up an appointment
with a Career Counselor. There will be a series of three appointments.
This will allow the student to do inventories, research, and learn
more about themselves. They can then make a well informed decision
on what major and/or minor they are interested in pursuing. If you
don’t want your students to get “burned,”
send them to the AACE center so they can confirm their major
or explore other “hot”
possibilities.
Computer Requirement
Students should only take one of the two computer
courses required CIS 101 OR CSCI 163.
Course Numbering Issues
- Freshmen and sophomores should primarily be taking
courses numbered 100 to 299.
- Ordinarily juniors and seniors take courses numbered
from 300 to 499; 500 to 599 can be taken by juniors and seniors.
Degree Summaries
Degree summaries are prepared in the Office of the
Registrar by the degree analysts. Each degree seeking student who
has completed 60 hours or more will have a degree summary on file
in the Office of the Registrar and will receive notification that
they can pick it up. Students and advisors should review the degree
summary to identify where the student is regarding degree completion
and graduation requirements. The degree summary should then be signed
by both student and advisor and returned to their degree analyst.
Degree summaries are updated each semester by a degree analyst and
can be picked up by students prior to registration.
To determine which degree analyst works with a particular student
advisee, review the following list looking at the first letter of
the student’s last name:
A-G
Luci Williams, ext. 5831
H-P
Judy Channell, ext. 4457
Q-Z
LuAnn Pfeifer, ext. 5832

SWS New Addition
SWS has added some new features. You can now
go online to the course schedule on SWS and select from Virtual
College ONLY, Open Courses ONLY, and General Education ONLY or any
combination of these. The hope is that these will help all of us
SWS more efficiently. Check
it out!
Transfer and Articulation

institutions for students with an Associate of Arts or an Associate
of Science. This agreement is not limited to Kansas institutions
and community colleges. If you have a student with transfer hours
and need assistance, please contact a degree analyst in the Office
of the Registrar. Do not have students repeat courses that have
been successful completed without visiting with a degree analyst.
