Tiger Exchange Newsletter

What is the Tiger Exchange Newsletter? This is an Academic Advising newsletter for all Academic Advisors at Fort Hays State University. Each semester the Academic Advising and Career Exploration Center (AACE) sends out an email with the Tiger Exchange Newsletter to all faculty and staff informing them of valuable information that would help enhance their job. It is also posted to the web site.

Welcome to the Fall 2007 semester! I want to begin by introducing myself. My name is Caroline Fox, and I am the Interim Director of the Academic Advising and Career Exploration Center (AACE) for this year. I have been at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) a little over four years and have been the Coordinator of AACE.

A lot of new and exciting things are taking off at Fort Hays State University. Know that the AACE team is here to help you. Please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are located in Picken Hall 100, 785-628-5577, advising@fhsu.edu, http://www.fhsu.edu/aace/.

I have a B.A in Psychology and a M.S. in Counseling from Fort Hays State University. Hays, KS has been my home for thirteen years now and I am excited to be back at my alma mater! I am currently an Academic Advisor for all on campus and virtual undecided students on campus. I am also a Career Counselor, assisting students with the career exploration process through individual counseling appointments or through the EAC 100 Career Planning and Development course. This course is offered for both virtually and on-campus students. I help students decide on a major or confirm one already chosen. My graduate assistant is Megan Greer, who is currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She assists me with advising students and with career counseling. I look forward to meeting all of you. Have a great semester and here is to a successful year!

Career Exploration

Please remember to check out our “Cool Career of the Month” by clicking on the link below. Every month a new occupation will be posted to the web site. These occupations are chosen from student feedback through the career exploration process. The link provides students information on what major is needed for that occupation, the responsibilities, and the salary of the occupation. Also be sure to check out the “Top 25 Jobs for 2007”! These occupations are from a broad range of industries requiring varying degrees of training and salary as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Do you know a student who may be unsure of their major? Please refer them to AACE for an appointment with a career counselor. Many new students enter the University undecided about a major. Even some students who enter with a specific major are not always firmly decided. Statistics show students are very likely to change their major at least once during their educational experience. AACE helps guide students in the direction that best suits them. We offer career counseling to students which allow undecided students, as well as other students, the option to visit with a counselor about their career path. The counselor helps students identify their interests, abilities, values, and personality to find career options available to them.
