Chemistry is an experimental science that encompasses composition, structure and properties of substances and the reaction of these substances. Chemistry is divided into five major areas: analytical, biological, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. The study of chemistry provides the basic knowledge necessary to deal with many of the needs of society varying from the development of new drugs to the search for alternate forms of energy. Chemistry at Fort Hays State University stresses laboratory instruction as well as classroom work. This means that students study the intricate details of chemical science in the classroom and simultaneously study these and related topics in the laboratory. The laboratory settings allow students to expand on essential reasoning, experimental design, close observation of details, and the manipulation of scientific apparatus. Undergraduate students at FHSU learn to use the scientific instrumentation available in the department. Students interested in studying chemistry need to be inquisitive and interested in solving problems using their minds. Chemists must be able to communicate their ideas verbally and in a written format. To achieve this level of preparation, high school students need to take as much Math and English as possible.
