Accounting involves measuring, classifying, recording, summarizing, and communicating financial information needed to support economic decisions. The people making decisions include present and potential investors, lenders, managers of businesses, and those who sell and buy from businesses. An accounting major may select from four major areas: public accounting, business and industry, government, and education. Upon completion of the accounting core, students are academically trained in financial, managerial and governmental accounting as well as in auditing, taxation, and management information systems.
