discrimination

How do I report harassment or discrimination?
  • You should report all incidents of harassment or discrimination to your immediate supervisor.

  • Failure to report incidents  may limit the ability to bring a later action.

  • Students should report incidents of harassment to the department chair or to the supervisor of the one doing the harassing.

  • If you are uncomfortable reporting to the supervisor for any reason you may report to his/her supervisor or to any other supervisory party, including Chairs, Deans and/or Vice Presidents.

  • You may always report to the Equal Employment Opportunity Officer or to the personnel office.

  • For specific information regarding reporting click here or go to the Faculty handbook or the student handbook.
Liability of the University
  • The university may be held liable for harassment even if they do not know of the harassment.

  • If the harassment is of the “quid pro quo” type the university may be responsible whether it was known to them or not.

  • Other types of harassment must be handled correctly in order for the university to be protected.

  • It is therefore very important that all harassment reports and any action taken based on the reports be documented.

  • The fact that it was never “officially” reported will not protect the university if the harassment was told to someone who could act or if the action was such that it “should have” been known to those who could take action.

  • Every effort will be made to keep the reporting process confidential.  However, an investigation may be made and people who are aware of the situation will be contacted.

  • Actions taken may also be confidential, and can be anything from a reprimand to the loss of a position.
