Students in the Department of Agriculture Soils class will be assisting the public in constructing rain barrels for use in the landscape. This service-learning project allows students to integrate community service activities into academic curricula. A rain barrel connects directly to the home’s downspout and allows the rainwater coming off the roof to fill the barrel. Collecting rainwater and using it slowly on your landscape encourages infiltration, which helps prevent runoff of pollutants into local streams, creeks, and rivers. In the heat of the summer, nearly 40% of household water is used for outdoor watering. The cost is $10 per barrel. In order to meet demand, you may register for one barrel per person with a limit of four per household. |
