Each
year, the FHSU Alumni Association presents accomplished
alumni and friends with awards in honor of their achievements
and service. At Homecoming, three categories of awards
are to be given: Young Alumni, Nita M. Landrum
and Alumni Achievement. The Alumni Association
considers the awards program one of its finest endeavors.
The Alumni
Achievement Award recognizes graduates who have
made outstanding, unselfish contributions in service to
community, state or nation, both as citizens in their
chosen careers and through philanthropy. The Young
Alumni Award recognizes 10- through 15-year graduates
for professional and educational achievement, community
activities, honors and awards or other accomplishments
since graduation. The Nita M. Landrum Award
recognizes alumni or friends who have provided sustained
volunteer service for the betterment of the Alumni Association,
or the university, in their communities. Summaries of
the the award recipients' accomplishments follow; you

Bill Havice
has been involved at FHSU both as a student and instructor.
He earned both his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts
and his Masters of Science in Industrial Education from
FHSU in 1977 and 1979 respectfully. He went on to earn his
Ed.S. from Pittsburg State University in 1984 and his Ph.D.
from Kansas State University in 1994.
Havice was employed as in instructor at FHSU from 1979-1996.
While serving as an instructor in the Technology Studies
department, Havice was influential in creating a new degree
and curriculum in Instructional Technology as well as assisting
with the development of the degree in Information Networking
and Telecommunications. Additionally, in his tenure at FHSU,
the Technology Studies department made the transition from
manual to computer aided drafting and developed a communication
systems lab. As a student at FHSU, Havice was a member of
the Tiger Wrestling team, earning a 7th place finish in
1977 at the NAIA National Wrestling Tournament. Currently
Havice is employed as the Associate Dean for Academic Support
Services and Undergraduate Studies and Professor in the
College of Health, Education, and Human Development at Clemson
University in Clemson, South Carolina.
He and his wife, Pamela ’80, ’84, have two daughters,
Brooke Ann and Briana Lea. They are at home in Clemson.

When
Katrina Hess chose to return to her hometown of Hays, it
was considered by the medical profession as under served
and in special need of another Family Physician. Hess has
done everything she can to fill that need. As Family Medicine
Physician and Medical Director of the Hess Clinic, Hess
employees a staff of 16 people and serves 5,000 patients
in Hays and Northwest Kansas.
Hess received her Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from FHSU
in 1989. She graduated from the University of Kansas Medical
School in 1994. While at FHSU, she was active in the Chemistry
and Physics Clubs. She also spent eight years in the U.S.
Army Reserve Service Staff. She has volunteered her time
as a volunteer faculty member at both the University of
Kansas and Wichita State University as well as in the Volunteer
Faculty Nurse Practitioner Program at FHSU. Hess also volunteers
her time to speak with Chemistry students at FHSU on a frequent
basis.
She and her husband, Kendall Krug ’83, OD, are at
home in Hays with their two children, Russell and Laura.

One of the
key components of looking at a college professor’s
success is to examine his published research. In the case
of Donald Kaufman, his published research clearly points
to success. Kaufman’s research has been published
in a total of 144 publications.
Kaufman received both his Bachelor of Science in General
Science and Masters of Science in Zoology from FHSU in 1965
and 1967 respectively. He earned his Ph.D. from the University
of Georgia in 1972. Currently he is Professor of Mammalian
Ecology in the Division of Biology at Kansas State University.
While at FHSU, he was a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, Beta Beta
Beta, and Phi Kappa Phi. He also had both a Graduate Fellowship
and Graduate Assistantship in Biology while attending the
university. He and his wife, Glennis Kaufman, Ph.D., have
been involved in many philanthropic activities over the
past 15 years. These activities include contributing to
the Sternberg Building Fund as well as being life members
and adjunct curators for the museum and being the founding
contributors to the Grassroots Arts Center in Lucas.
Kaufman and his wife are at home in Manhattan. They have
one child, Dawn Kaufman, Ph.D.

Certain people leave Kansas
to pursue something big. Instead, Robert Orr brought something
big to Kansas.
Orr received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from
FHSU in 1980. He is founder and chief executive officer
of Brooke Corporation, a public company he founded in 1986.
Brooke Corporation was added to the American Stock Exchange
in 2003. Today, with more than 600 employees, Brooke Corporation
franchises insurance agencies to more than 400 locations
in 26 states. Additionally, he is an Air Force veteran,
a graduate of the Colorado School of Banking and has served
as president of several Kansas banks. He has also written
a book, Death of an Insurance Salesman?, which outlines
his philosophy regarding insurance distribution.
He and his wife, Kimba, are at home in Smith Center. They
have three children: Kaley, Casey, and Kelsey.

LaNette Schmeidler
Parker serves as a communications consultant in the Change
Implementation practice of Towers Perrin, a global human
resources consulting firm that helps Fortune 500 and international
companies manage their investments in people. And while
working for this highly prestigious company, she has learned
that she can compete with the “best of them”
because of what she learned at Fort Hays – that “there’s
no substitute for hard work and common sense.”
Parker received both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of
Arts in English from FHSU in 1995 and 1996 respectively.
While at FHSU, she also pursued a Field of Emphasis –
Leadership Studies. Parker was highly involved with Student
Government while attending FHSU. She also was editor of
Lines: A Journal of the Arts and a Graduate Teaching Assistant
for the English Department. Additionally, she has presented
to FHSU English Department students on how to apply the
English degree outside of teaching and is currently leading
the effort to set up an endowed scholarship at FHSU of behalf
of the Schmeidler family.
She and her husband, Brion Parker, are at home in Mountain
View, California.

Not
only was Mark Haub an outstanding student while earning
his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from FHSU in 1992, he
also was a member of the FHSU Cross Country and Track and
Field teams as well as a Resident Assistant and Resident
Manager at Agnew Hall.
After earning his degree from FHSU, he went on to earn both
his Masters of Science and his Ph.D. from the University
of Kansas in 1996 and 1998 respectively. While earning his
degrees, he was given both the Outstanding Masters Student
Award and the Outstanding Doctoral Student Award. He currently
is employed by Kansas State University as an Assistant Professor
in the Department of Human Nutrition. He is a member of
the American Society of Nutritional Science, the North American
Association for the Study of Obesity, the American Diabetes
Association, and the American College of Sports Medicine
where he received the Student Research Award in both 1994
and 1996.
He and his wife, Michelle, are at home in Manhattan with
their child, Trae.

Jerry Anderson
graduated from FHSU in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in
Biology. He has owned and operated a ranch in the Kinsley
area for the last 45 years. For the past 20 years he also
has been building, selling, and donating handmade furniture
from boards taken from an old two-story barn destroyed by
a tornado in 1984. He has exhibited and sold his furniture
in Taos, New Mexico; Denver, Colorado; Green Mountain Falls,
Colorado and throughout Kansas. Anderson has been the director
of the Kinsley COOP, the Edwards County Historical Society,
and the Investors Savings and Loan. Additionally, he has
served as Advisory Direct for Farmers Bank and Trust, President
of the Edwards County Fair Association, and a member of
the Kansas Livestock Association.
Jerry Anderson is proud to be an alum of FHSU. So proud,
in fact, that he and his wife, Dianne, established the Anderson-Crandall
scholarship for students from Edwards County who plan to
attend the university.
He and his wife live in the Kinsley area. They have two
children, Lisa Gales and Scott Anderson. |
