The 2000 Alumni Awards
Eleven alumni and friends of Fort Hays State University will be recognized with awards for their service and efforts at Homecoming 2000. The Alumni Achievement Award, established in 1959, recognizes graduates who have made outstanding, unselfish contributions through service to community, state, and nation. The Young Alumni Award was established in 1977 to acknowledge 10th- through 15th-year graduates for professional and educational achievement, community activities, or other accomplishments since graduation.
 
Non-graduate friends of the university are shown appreciation through the Distinguished Service Award, which applauds continuing concern for humanity, through support of spiritual, cultural, and educational avenues. The Nita M. Landrum Award values service for the betterment of the FHSU Alumni Association and the university.
 
Young Alumni Award Recipients
Kirk Johnson photo
Dr. Kirk Johnson earned his bachelor's in sociology from FHSU in 1990, a master's in international development studies and sociology from Ohio University in 1992, plus a Ph.D. in 1998 from McGill University, graduating with honors from both Ohio and McGill. He currently uses his teaching skills as an Assistant Professor of Sociology and the Coordinator of the Sociology Program at the University of Guam.
Diane Pfeifer photo
Dr. Diane Pfeifer completed her bachelor's in sociology in 1988 and master's in counseling in 1990 from FHSU. She earned her doctorate in college personnel administration in 1995 from the University of Northern Colorado. She has served as Dean of Students at Tennessee Weslyan College, Dean of Student Affairs at Truman State University and was recently named interim Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Registrar at FHSU.
Mordecai Boone photo
Mordecai Boone graduated cum laude from FHSU with his bachelor's degree in political science in 1990, completed his Juris Doctorate, graduating magna cum laude from Washburn Law School in 1993, and finished in the top ten percent of the class of 1993 from the U.S. Naval Justice School. He presently utilizes his legal skills at Shook, Hardy, and Bacon, L.L.P. in San Francisco, in which he was a founding member.
Distinguished Service Award Recipients
Maurice Witten photo
Dr. Maurice Witten bachelor's degree in math and science from Emporia State University was realized in 1956, a master's in physics from the University of Nebraska in 1960, and his doctorate in science education from the University of Iowa in 1967. For nearly forty years, Dr. Witten served students in the FHSU physics department, either as an instructor or the chair of the department.
Earl & Winona Field photo
Earl and Winona Field are receiving an award as a couple, since all accomplishments were the result of their being a solid team. Mr. Field earned his bachelor's degree in economics from FHSU in 1937 and went on to own and operate Field Abstract and Title Company. Mrs. Field was a homemaker, and supported her husband's business endeavors. They are currently retired and live in Hays and Phoenix.
Nita M. Landrum Award Recipients
Richard Roemer photo Richard Roemer attended FHSU and graduated in 1948 with a bachelor's degree in agriculture. He has been recognized locally, regionally, and nationally for his work in agriculture in the area of Angus cattle. Roemer has been a guiding force in the Half-Century Club, where he has served as president, and is currently on the Endowment Board of Trustees.
Lois Lee Myerly photo Since her graduations in 1946 and 1966 in business administration, Lois Lee Myerly has remained committed to the university and its efforts. After 26 years of employment with FHSU, she retired in 1988, and has supported FHSU through service to the Alumni Association Board of Directors and Endowment Board of Trustees, as well as the Half-Century Club.

Gregg Schwarz photo
A Hays native, Gregg Schwarz continued his education at FHSU earning his bachelor's degree in political science in 1970. He then went on to become a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation after the completion of his training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. in 1975. He now serves as a Supervisory Special Agent for the FBI, overseeing a group of 35 agents that perform background checks.
Bill Jellison photo
Dr. Billy Jellison has been described as "Mr. Fort Hays State" because serving students has not only been his life, but his livelihood. A graduate with a 1951 bachelor's in botany and 1952 master's in education from FHSU, and completing his doctorate in 1965 from the University of Colorado; Dr. Jellison has been in education his entire career having served 22 years as a FHSU administrator.
Ramon Powers photo Dr. Ramon Powers is a 1961 and 1963 graduate of FHSU with his bachelor's and master's degrees in history, and his doctorate being conferred upon him from the University of Kansas in 1971. His years in teaching a variety of history subjects in colleges and universities in Kansas and Missouri led him to his current position with the Kansas State Historical Society, in which he now serves as the Executive Director.
Leona Gallion photo Focusing on the areas of business administration and education, Dr. Leona Gallion received her bachelor's from FHSU in 1957, master's and doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado in 1960 and 1968, respectively. As the current Dean and Professor of the School of Business at Indiana State University, she has received numerous honors and awards.
