Joint Committee on State Building Construction
The Joint Committee on State Building Construction visited
Fort Hays State University on Monday, November 13. FHSU was one stop
on the statewide tour focusing on the growing issue of deferred maintenance.
The committee members got a first-hand look at FHSU's $35.2-million backlog
of academic building maintenance needs. Several key legislators attended
the luncheon and were taken on a tour of the campus.
According to Dr. Edward Hammond
and FHSU director of facilities planning, Dana Cunningham the state
funding over the last 18 years has provided only an average of 7
percent of FHSU’s
annual rehabilitation and maintenance funds, leaving FHSU to cover
the remaining expenses. Dr. Hammond also estimates an annual maintenance
need of around $1.9 million for FHSU.
