| Tonya Newton enters her first season as a student assistant coach of the Fort Hays State men's and women's cross country and track and field programs. A native of Salina, Kan., Newton ran cross country for the Tigers from 2005-07. Prior to that, she was a member of both the cross country and track and field teams at Butler Community College from 2003-05.
Newton earned All-MIAA honors in the 10,000 meters running for FHSU. She also led the Tigers to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA II South Central Regional. During her two years at FHSU, she improved to 5:05 (1500), 10:45 (3K) and 18:37 (5K)
Newton is working towards a bachelor degree in Business.
