Hands-on Learning Opportunities
Here at FHSU, it is important that you gain hands-on experience to better prepare you for your future career. Gain experience by taking a field course, spending time in one of our high-tech science labs, or working with cadavers. Don’t spend all your time in the classroom — make a difference by getting real-life experience.
Field Courses
Ready to try your hand in your area of biological sciences? Enroll in a field course offered by the Department of Biological Sciences. The department periodically offers courses centered on field trips that last 1 to 11 days. Spend time in the local area studying Prairie and Range Plants or take an 11-day fieldtrip through the mountains and along the Pacific Coast of Washington, Oregon, and northern California to study the Natural History of the Pacific Northwest. Aside from the fieldtrips, most of the coursework can be completed online or at home.
Travel Honorarium
Want to learn more about your field from professionals and other students off campus? Enjoy the unique opportunity to travel to professional meetings and conferences through support from the Department of Biological Sciences and our travel honorarium. Both graduate and undergraduate students can have their travel costs paid if they actively participate in a variety of professional conferences, such as the Kansas Academy of Science, the Kansas Natural Resource Conference, the Kansas Ornithological Society, the Kansas Herpetological Society, Central Plains Society of Mammalogists, or the Southwestern Association of Naturalists. If you want to learn more, visit with your advisor, who can help you apply for the travel honorarium.
Internships
Want to try out your future career? The Department of Biological Sciences works with you to find an internship that fits your needs. Students have received paid internships and similar work experience in zoos and with agencies or private employers. Students also have opportunities to work at the university’s Sternberg Museum.
