Bachelor of Science in General Science
Minor in Biology
Students may concentrate their studies in one of
several areas of emphasis within biology or obtain a degree in general
science, combining biology with courses in the physical sciences.
Most options for a major in biology can be completed within the
minimum of 124 credit hours required by the university. These options
prepare students for entry-level positions with private employers
or government agencies. Many careers in biological sciences require
advanced study; thus, students also can prepare for further education
at the graduate level at FHSU or elsewhere. For some pre-professional
options, students must transfer to another institution to complete
their undergraduate degrees. A minor in biology requires completion
of at least 20 credit hours of biology courses as outlined below.
To obtain an undergraduate degree in Biology at FHSU, the student
and advisor select courses from:
1) the area of emphasis in biology,
2) required cognates offered by other departments, and
3) general education courses.
Except for some pre-professional programs, each option for a B.S.in
Biology accessed through the links below separates the biology courses
into 3 "tiers". Tier I includes 5 fundamental biology
courses. Tier II is comprised of several biology courses with broad
applications, and the student must pass at least 4 of these courses.
Tier III includes additional required or recommended biology courses
specific to the option. Required cognate (non-biology) courses are
listed for each option.
