Bioblitz at Killdeer Mountains Game Management Area

The North Dakota Natural Science Society (NDNSS) hosted the second annual Bioblitz at the Killdeer Mountains Game Management Area in eastern North Dakota on July 11-12, 1998. The Bioblitz is intended to promote North Dakota's natural resources, provide a fun outdoor opportunity of socializing and meeting other biologists and enthusiasts, and to utilize the knowledge of professional and amateur biologists to compile information about species present at various sites around the state.

The weekend's efforts were hampered by mist, rain, and strong winds. Eight dedicated individuals came to explore the area. Because of the winds, we decided to concentrate our efforts at the area' large prairie dog town, which was located in a deep valley largely out of the wind. We found a wide diversity of plant species and growing habitats located on the steep, moist hillsides, along several intermittent streams, in the open grassland on the valley floor, and in an aspen grove. Birds listed were found largely in this area and along the more sheltered prairie trails. The list of species we observed this weekend is only a small portion of the rich diversity of the area. We encourage you to visit this area yourself (during better weather!) to explore its unique and beautiful landscape.

The KilldeerMountains lie about 40 miles due north of Dickinson, at the edge of the Badlands. The area is characterized by extensive flat-topped summits dissected into numerous, finger-like spurs and deep, sheltered valleys. Habitats within the wildlife management area are representative of diverse plant and animal life of the KilldeerMountains. On the east end of the unit, extensive woodlands on the western slopes of the mountains host oak, aspen, paper birch, and other plants more characteristic of Minnesota or New England. Ruffed grouse were successfully transplanted into the Killdeers in the 1970s and may be found in these woodlands along with turkey and elk. To the west the land falls away to mixed-grass prairie and then into the Little Missouri-formed Badlands. These areas contain plants and wildlife characteristic of shortgrass prairie, with south aspects dominated by arid-land species, and north aspects dominated by buffalo berry, cedar, and juniper.
