Leaf Epidermal Features - Stomatal Apparatus
The scanning electron micrographs below
show enlargements of the epidermis of both a monocot and dicot. Cells
in the monocot epidermis show a linear arrangement whereas those of the
dicot exhibit a random arrangement. Note the slit-like gas exchange pores
(stomata) on both surfaces. An enlargement of one stomatal apparatus
is also provided.
Onion grass (monocot) epidermis.
Scurf-pea (dicot) epidermis.
Dicot stomatal apparatus showing dark slit-like opening (stoma) surrounded
by two arched, inflated guard cells. The guard cells are mostly hidden
by
overlying cuticle.
