FHSU Budget Bulletin
Jan. 27, 2011
The news that the House Appropriations Committee proposes to reduce the pay of state employees by 7.5 percent has understandably created concern among Fort Hays State University faculty, staff and students, but I urge everyone not to overreact.
Just a week ago, Gov. Sam Brownback released a proposed budget that recommended no cuts in funding for higher education.
At that time, I stated my appreciation to the new governor for recognizing the measures FHSU and the other state universities had taken already to reduce budgets and for understanding the importance of higher education to the state's economic recovery. However, I also cautioned at the time that it would be a long process with many twists and turns. The Legislature will play a significant role in setting the budget, but it will require action by both the House and the Senate, and Gov. Brownback will have to sign the budget bill before it can become law.
Let me reassure you that we are participating as budget deliberations continue, and I will keep you informed as the process unfolds. Relax and continue to do a good job.
Again, I understand your concern, but it is premature to assume what the details of the final budget will be.
