Center for Civic Leadership

The Center for Civic Leadership is active in several American Democracy Project acitivites. Below is a list of the programs that we actively participate in and support.

After a Fort Hays State University alumnus donated two original handwritten Ben Franklin letters and two pages from his newspaper, The Pennsylvania Gazette, to the university, the idea for the Ben Franklin Papers was born. After many months of planning, the project held its first event on September 28, 2006. You can read more about The Ben Franklin Papers, the donor of the letters and newspapers, upcoming events, educational experiences, and contact information for organizers of the event by clicking here.

Times Talk is a weekly luncheon presentation and discussion about current issues and articles featured in The New York Times. Dr. Paul Faber, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, created the program through which FHSU faculty, staff, students and community members lead one-hour discussions about recent Times articles. Not limited solely to domestic and international politics, Times Talk sessions cover business, technology, the arts, science and other topics of interest. The New York Times has been partnering with educators since the 1930s. Recently The Times developed a readership program in collaboration with more than 1,200 universities across the country, serving as a resource for more than 2,000 faculty. On September 7, 2004, Fort Hays State University launched a readership program in conjunction with The New York Times and The Hays Daily News. The readership program is part of the university’s American Democracy Project.

Now in its third year, The New York Times is being integrated into classroom like never before. Readership numbers have increased dramatically as new drop-off locations have been made available. In addition, The New York Times has provided some faculty and staff access to Times Select, a premier online version of the newspaper with a greater wealth of information and multimedia materials. Each and every day the readership programs provide students, faculty, and staff the ability to engage in the world around them like never before in Western Kansas.
