Kansas Corps is a pool of student volunteers from Kansas colleges and universities who serve the community service needs of the state of Kansas. Kansas Corps serves as the coordinating agency that links various community service and volunteerism programs from Kansas higher education institutions for the direct purpose of serving the citizens of Kansas. With a single phone call, this group of college student volunteers can be mobilized to provide disaster relief, social services and/or community development assistance to any region of the state. Many of the Kansas public and private institutions of higher learning have some form of a community service/volunteerism program that is designed to match college students with the local community. This initiative does not create a new community service program, but rather links and builds upon the established programs across the state. The purpose of this program is to create a network of these various college programs that, when needed, can be called into action to serve the state.

Potential Service Areas

The Kansas Corps focuses on three primary areas of community need. Structures, processes and networks are designed to address the following public service issues:

  • Disaster Relief Services. College student volunteers can be mobilized in large numbers to provide a variety of emergency services during or following a local or state-wide disaster.

  • Social Services. College student volunteers can be called to assist with the development and/or operations of social service programs. For example, volunteers can be involved in the issues of homelessness, literacy, child development, or elderly services.

  • Community Development Assistance. College student volunteers can be assembled to assist Kansas communities with a variety of community development needs. College students can help construct playgrounds and public parks, assist with downtown renovation, or provide valuable resources and services to economically depressed regions of Kansas.
Recruiting Kansas Corps Campus Leaders

In partnership with the Kansas Campus Compact, through an Ameri*Corps Careers for the Common Good grant, 20 students will be selected to serve as Kansas Corps Campus Leaders. These current college students will provide a minimum of 300 service hours during a one-year period. Campus Leaders will help promote and recruit other college student volunteers from their respective campuses to participate in statewide and local service events. In addition, these students will explore the possibility of future careers in professions serving the common good and become certified in emergency response. Upon successful completion of the required service hours, students will receive an educational award. Kansas Corps Campus Leaders are also eligible for a travel stipend to offset travel expenses related to Kansas Corps. Here is a more detailed job description.
