Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry

This program is suitable for a student preparing for a career as a chemical librarian, chemical salesperson, medical doctor, pharmaceutical salesperson, chiropractor or secondary school teacher. The Bachelor of Arts (BA) candidate should supplement the major with substantial courses in other subject areas. These courses should be chosen to enhance the student's career preparation. For example, students planning a career in the medical professions should include biology, mathematics and physics courses in their program. Students interested in a career in environmental chemistry or teacher education should follow the Environmental Chemistry emphasis or Teacher Education program.

Teacher Education

The BA degree may serve as preparation for secondary school teaching. A student must complete CHEM 120, 122, 250, 304 (or 340 and 342), 277, 280 and 476 to satisfy the subject matter and methods requirements for entering the Directed Teaching Program in Chemistry. Students seeking a BA degree in Chemistry must select the CHEM 340 and 342 option. Students planning to teach chemistry as a second field may select the minimal sequence with CHEM 304. All students must have credit in appropriate biology, geoscience, mathematics and physics cognate courses to meet certification requirements in chemistry.
