Textbook: Bailey, P.S., Bailey, C.A.; Organic Chemistry, 6th ed.
Classroom procedures:
Methods -- The Powerpoint-based lecture material is reinforced by numerous
problem assignments.
Tentative Sequence of Material Coverage
| Chapter | Topic |
| 1 | Structure & Bonding |
| 15 | Spectroscopy |
| 2, 4.1-4.4 | Alkanes, alkyl halides |
| 7 | Stereochemistry |
| 4 | Reaction Mechanisms |
| 3,5 | Alkenes & alkynes |
| 9 | Alcohols & ethers |
| 6 | Aromatic chemistry |
Chapter groupings above represent the material which will be covered by each hour exam or final exam.
Evaluation -- Lecture and laboratory scores are combined and the same
letter grade is assigned for each student. The exams, quizzes, and final
exam from the lecture portion of the course account for 60% of the grade
and the laboratory reports account for 40%. Students are evaluated by their
performance on three exams (100 points each), best ten short quizzes and
problem assignments (100 points), and a comprehensive final examination
(150 points). Evaluation in the laboratory is based upon thirteen laboratory
reports (50 points each), two lab quizzes (50 points each), and lab technique
(50 points). The approximate grading scale will be as follows:
90-100 A
80-89 B
70-79 C
60-69 D
0-59 U
The instructor reserves the right to adjust the scale if appropriate.
I may adjust the scale downward but I will not adjust it upward.
General Policies:
Attendance -- Attendance is expected and recorded, but it is not used
in the evaluation of students.
Behavior -- I expect students at FHSU to act in an adult, socially-responsible manner. The groundwork you are laying for yourself now will determine your path through the remainder of your life. I expect, therefore, that you will retain academic integrity (not cheat or plagiarize). I specifically retain the right to discharge from the classroom any student engaging in socially irresponsible or disruptive behavior, including, but not limited to: talking, eating or drinking, violent behavior, sexual harassment or disorderly conduct, as defined in your student handbook. See also page 61 of the 1999-2002 Catalog.
Makeup work -- Makeup exams are given to deserving students provided arrangements are made within a reasonable length of time. Students are not allowed to makeup quizzes except in those cases where students miss a large number of quizzes for legitimate reasons. Students are allowed to make up laboratory work provided that the laboratory work is made up within two weeks. The two week requirement is waived in cases of extended illness.
Grades of incomplete -- Incomplete are recorded in those cases that comply with the policy stated in the current University Catalog. This policy states that for an incomplete to be given, performed work must be of passing quality, and that if the incomplete work is not finished within 1 year the grade changes to "U." You have the right to appeal all grades earned at Fort Hays State University. Details pertaining to this policy can be found on page 59 of the 1999-2002 Catalog.
Required laboratory materials -- Goggles and aprons are required in the lab for safety reasons. Lab instructions are provided in advance.
The laboratory exercises are coordinated with the lecture material, as best as possible. Laboratory experiments are chosen to reinforce concepts which have been discussed in lecture. The weekly, three-hour laboratory is preceded by a discussion hour.
