About the Smoky Hill Golden Retriever Club
The club was founded in 1999, with Tom Cole as the driving force. Our motto,
"Helping Kids and Loving Dogs" derives from our two main activities. On an ongoing
basis, we rescue Goldens in need of new homes and help place them. To date,
our club has rescued and placed over 100 dogs since 1999. Many of our members
also donate time and money to buying Christmas tree angels for underprivileged
children.

About Golden Retrievers
The
breed standard
The breed standard is much too dry to do justice in describing the temperment
of goldens. I was born and raised in a German Shepard family, and fell
in love with goldens as a graduate student. I had been invited to my mentor's
(Dr. Paul D. Ray) house for Thanksgiving, as I was not able to travel the long
distance home for the holidays. Within seconds of being let into the house,
I was greeted warmly by his dog and within minutes had her in my lap.
Dr. Ray seemed embarassed by this, but it is very much in keeping with the temperment
of a golden. Goldens are exceptional dogs around children as well.
My female will try and comfort the TV if a baby is crying while the television
plays.
Fort Hays State University Homecoming Parade is scheduled
for October 1st, 2005. Come join the festivities and see the dogs march
in red, white and blue.

2005 Calendar of Upcoming Events
- January 30th, 2005 11:30-2:00 Soup-R-Bowl- This event will be held at the
Hadley Center 205 E. 7th and is held to raise funds for the Humane Society.
Tickets are $5.00 and you will sample 13 different soups and if still hungry,
have a bowl of your favorite. There will also be enticers with each soup,
designed to help buy your vote. Jodi and I will be representing the SHGRC
with a knock off of Olive Garden's soup. Any one interested in purchasing
tickets can contact me, Jodi, or Tom and Vickie Cole. Also, Bunnie Bowen,
Donella Belleau, Jodi and I will be making homemade dog biscuits and selling
them at the Soup-R-Bowl to raise additional funds. Please come and support
the cause if you can!!!
- April/May- First Annual Spring Golden Gathering-Come kick off spring at
Bunnie Bowen's house (date to be determined). Bring your golden(s) and let them
play unleashed in the backyard while we enjoy good food and good company. Anyone
interested in helping or with ideas or suggestions, contact Bunnie ( Bunnie_Bowen@Liz.com
).
- June- Garage Sale- Back by popular demand!! A great way to raise money and
clean out your garage all in one shot. Sally Klausmeyer (kjklaus@ruraltel.net)
will be chairing this year's garage sale and I believe Donna Fleharty has graciously
offered her garage to have it in again. Committee members include, Janet Affentranger,
Donna Fleharty, and Shannon Myers and I am sure it will be just as successful
as it has been in the past!
- July- 4th of July- Wild West Fest Parade- This one
is always iffy due to the weather, but if anyone has a pickup that they wouldn't
mind the dogs riding in the back of, we should be set. Jodi will be chairing this
event and Tom and Vicki Cole, along with Janet Affentranger and Lyle Lohrmeyer
will be on the committee. Any suggestions or volunteers, call Jodi Steltz ( st.jodi@eaglecom.net
).
- August-Summer Picnic- Our annual picnic in the park is always a good time to
unwind and enjoy some good barbecue. Andrew Moland ( mleiker@fhsu.edu )(who will
be marrying Jodi's daughter Meghan and adopting Toby) will be chairing the picnic.
Scotty and Libby Legere are on the committee and anyone wanting to volunteer to
assist can contact Andrew.
- September/October- Oktoberfest FHSU Homecoming Parade-
We won last year and let's see if we can do it again!! I ( psmyers@ruraltel.net
) will be chairing this parade and I hope we can top our participation and show
this town what we are all about! Committee members are Tom and Vicki Cole, Donella
Belleau, Bunnie Bowen and Jodi Steltz and I think it will be a blast!
- October-
Second Annual Fall Golden Gathering- Sally Klausmeyer (kjklaus@ruraltel.net) is
in charge of this one and Anne Weigner from Dodge City would like to help. Just
like we did at Jodi's last year we hope to be able to get everyone together and
enjoy the weather before the winter hits and brings us all back inside. Any ideas
or suggestions or additional volunteers can contact Sally.
- December- Frost Fest
Parade- I don't know if we can beat last year, being the winners and all, but
we sure are going to try!! Andrew ( mleiker@fhsu.edu ) is looking to build bigger
and better things and will be chairing this committee. Committee members include
Tom and Vickie Cole, Shannon Myers, Anne Wiegner, Bunnie Bowen, and Jodi Steltz.
Its a lot of work and a lot of fun, so we need everyone we can get for this one.
- Christmas 2005- Angel Tree and Community Assistance Center Baskets are usually
what this involves. At the meeting the question was asked if these were the groups
that most needed our help. Any ideas, let Tom Cole ( talk2toc@media-net.net )
know as he will be chairing these events. One spectacular suggestion that Tom
came up with was caroling with the dogs at the retirement communities around town.
We all thought this was a great idea and think that it would be greatly appreciated
by the seniors and a heck of a lot of fun for us.
- Yearound! Placement Assistance/Rescue-
Please continue to contact Tom Cole( talk2toc@media-net.net ) if you are interested
in adopting a surrendered or abandoned golden or if you know of anyone who is.
This is something we will also be trying to keep up to date on our website, we
love to share all our wonderful success stories!
