Tired of the same old when it comes to educational strategy? Think education should prepare kids to think outside the box and solve problems creativley? So do we. JAZZ, is a problem-based leanring (PBL) strategy is the result of ten months of study in a partnership of area superintendents, and Fort Hays State University. This innovative new learning strategy seeks to redesign and energize secondary education in a way unique to Western Kansas. JAZZ is a weeklong event where students suspend their normal class schedule and enroll in four 90 minute classes, based on essential questions for student research and development. These classes are interdisciplinary, meaning they will focus on two subjects and hope to meet the main objective, "To bring rigor and relevance to students' studies." |
What does JAZZ have for teachers? ~ Training - Free 1-2 hours graduate credit PBL Level I course and all materials ~ Two Follow-Up Classes - Level II and Level III PBL, also free 1-2 credit hours ~ One Day Extra Planning - Prior to the implementation of the unit developed ~ Materials - classroom supplies and materials for the PBL unit will be supplied |
What does JAZZ have for the whole school? ~ Promote Relevance - of High School course work in realtionship to their future ~ Build Relationships - between students and the significant adults in their lives ~ Expect Rigor - by focusing on problem solving, creative thinking, and interdisciplinary experiences ~ Train Student Leaders - Through guided leadership activities ~ Communicate Learning - with opportunities to celebrate results and competencies |
