Course:  TEEL 363: Social Studies Methods
Instructor:  Sue Boldra / Sue Jacobs
Number of Students Involved: 58
Course Objectives:

  • Learn how to engage candidates in developing and organizing a service-learning project to enhance an elementary classroom.
  • Provide candidates with the opportunity to communicate and engage with a variety of entities outside the classroom setting.

Community Impact:  Area fifth and eighth grade students gathered on the campus of Fort Hays State University at Gross Memorial Coliseum on September 28, 2006 for what was a fulfilling and educational program related to the life of one of our greatest founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin.

 

Course:  SPED 360: Principles of Instruction in Special Education
Instructor:  Linda Hyatt
Number of Students Involved: 24
Course Objectives:

  • To provide respite care services to parents of children who have autism and other special needs which will enable parents to attend regular support meetings provided by DSNWK.

Community Impact:  The project was designed to assist Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas (DSNWK) in providing respite care in various designated locations throughout the community.  This project enhanced the students’ ability to interact with and gain a better understanding of special needs children, their parents and community service agencies.

 

Course: TECS 120: Power, Energy, and Transportation
Instructor:  Robert Howell
Number of Students Involved:  24
Course Objectives:

  • To provide students with examples of power, energy, and transportation methods that we study in class.
  • To give students an excellent opportunity to see power, energy, and transportation methods in a real setting.

Community Impact:  Two years ago, the Kansas Electro Rally lost its director and no one was hired to replace him.  Without the Fort Hays State University Technology Studies students taking charge there would be no race.  Many high schools throughout the state would not have a program.

Course:  TEEL 260: Children’s Literature
Instructor:  Beth Walizer
Number of Students Involved:  53
Course Objectives:

  • Plan and develop literature-based classroom instruction using literary quality as a selection standard.

Community Impact:  Young children throughout the community had an opportunity to come to FHSU and hear a candidate read quality literature.  The grade school children were exposed to quality literature and activities connecting to the literature.

 

Course:  TEEL 378: Reading & Language Arts Methods and Internship
Instructor:  Beth Walizer
Number of Students Involved:  50
Course Objectives:

  • To become sensitive to the needs of linguistically/culturally diverse students in multicultural environments.

Community Impact:  Candidates gained experience and knowledge beneficial to them as future community members and professional educators.  Community members saw candidates representing FHSU and working with their children, grandchildren, and students.

 

Course:  TECS 475: Mechanical & Electrical Systems
Instructor:  Joe Chretien
Number of Students Involved:  6
Course Objectives:

  • Students gain experience in plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems used in residential and commercial building projects.

Community Impact: Students acquired valuable experience in the estimating and implementation of an electrical project and provided a Habitat for Humanity Candidate Family with much needed wiring labor.
