Assistive Technology: Long Distance Education

The Department of Communication Disorders and the Department of Special Education at Fort Hays State University in cooperation with Research Institute for Assistive and Training Technologies at the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (RIATT@NASDSE) are proud to offer 20 different one-hour assistive technology courses provided through the Virtual College at FHSU.

  • These courses are used as a part of a Master's of Liberal Studies degree with an emphasis in Assistive Technology.
    • Participants must complete an 18-hour customized plan of study in assistive technology and related areas.
    • These 18 hours must include the following courses:
      • SLP 835 CA: Augmentative-Alternative Communication
      • SPED 810: Technology in Special Education
  • The Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) is a unique interdisciplinary graduate program available through the College of Arts and Sciences at FHSU. This MLS program involves:
    • 10-hour core requirement
    • 18-hour customized plan of study in assistive technology or related areas
    • 3-hour culminating experience for a total of 31 credit hours
    • Completion of all requirements of the Graduate School, including a comprehensive examination.
    • Purchasing a multimedia learning kit for each course and work independently with communications through electronic mail.

Other online courses offered by the Department of Speech-Language Pathology through the Virtual College are:

    • SLP 665: Communication and Aging (Undergraduate/Graduate, 2 credit hours)
    • SLP 835 CA: Augmentative-Alternative Communication (Graduate, 2 credit hours)
    • SLP 891: Cognitive Disorders and Their Rehabilitation (Graduate, 2 credit hours)

The Department of Special Education offers a variety of courses that are appropriate to supplement the MLS with an emphasis in Assistive Technology. For more information about these courses, please check out the Department of Special Education.
