Overview of Assistive Technology
Course Description:
This course provides educators, service
providers & parents
an overview of assistive technology in areas of communication,
mobility, education, recreation,
vocation, independence, and therapy/rehabilitation. Emphasis is on developing
awareness of the diversity of assistive technology currently available for
individuals with disabilities. Specific applications of assistive
technology devices which
improve and maintain the functioning capabilities of individuals w/ disabilities
are presented. Participants in this course will engage in independent learning
activities and will receive information that will enable them to gather information
about assistive technology devices, companies and related services. Assistive
technology can
be an invaluable component in the lives of individuals w/ disabilities. This
technology is effective for preschool through adult populations by increasing
opportunities for communication,
mobility, education, recreation, vocation, independence, and therapy/rehabilitation.
For assistive technology to become an integral part of the lives of individuals
w/disabilities, service
providers must, at the very least, develop an awareness of the
potential of this technology.

Low Technology Communication
Course Description:
This course emphasizes the development and use of two popular broadbased
simple
communication techniques that are appropriate for persons of all age levels.
The course will also introduce the participants to a wide variety of simple
devices, techniques, and concepts used to enable the non speaker to communicate
his/her
needs. Emphasis is placed on the life skill area of communication, but will
show their use in most life skill areas. In many instances, persons need
to communicate
needs, but the luxury of involved language development or augmentative devices
are immature or not immediately available. The techniques shown are intended
to provide an immediate, functional, and usually short-term communication
mode. The intervention techniques are intended to provide learning that supports
long-term
language and speech
development.
