Overview of Assistive Technology

Course Description:
This course provides educators, service providers & parents an overview of assistive technology in areas of communication, mobility, education, recreation, vocation, independence, and therapy/rehabilitation. Emphasis is on developing awareness of the diversity of assistive technology currently available for individuals with disabilities. Specific applications of assistive technology devices which improve and maintain the functioning capabilities of individuals w/ disabilities are presented. Participants in this course will engage in independent learning activities and will receive information that will enable them to gather information about assistive technology devices, companies and related services. Assistive technology can be an invaluable component in the lives of individuals w/ disabilities. This technology is effective for preschool through adult populations by increasing opportunities for communication, mobility, education, recreation, vocation, independence, and therapy/rehabilitation. For assistive technology to become an integral part of the lives of individuals w/disabilities, service providers must, at the very least, develop an awareness of the potential of this technology.

Assistive Technology: Switches and Toys

Course Description:
This course provides instruction on switches and toys as building blocks for assistive technology use,  Participants learn to construct and repair two basic switches, to investigate switches and their applications in assistive technology implementation, and to identify toy characteristics and interaction with switches. Assistive technology can be an invaluable component in the lives of individuals with disabilities. For assistive technology to become an integral part of the lives of individuals with disabilities, service providers must, at the very least, develop an awareness of the potential of this technology.

Funding:  Assistive Technology

Course Description:
This course considers a variety of funding sources available to consumers purchasing assistive technology devices. The process for the successful acquisition of selected assistive technology devices is described providing information on appropriate procedures,available resources, effective language and the appeal process. Professionals responsible for providing assistive technology services, caregivers of individuals with disabilities and consumers of assistive technology must be familiar with various funding procedures to acquire assistive technology devices. Successful
acquisition and implementation of assistive technology devices and services frequently depend on the funding sources available to the consumer and supporting agency.

Low Technology Communication

Course Description:
This course emphasizes the development and use of two popular broadbased simple
communication techniques that are appropriate for persons of all age levels. The course will also introduce the participants to a wide variety of simple devices, techniques, and concepts used to enable the non speaker to communicate his/her needs. Emphasis is placed on the life skill area of communication, but will show their use in most life skill areas. In many instances, persons need to communicate needs, but the luxury of involved language development or augmentative devices are immature or not immediately available. The techniques shown are intended to provide an immediate, functional, and usually short-term communication mode. The intervention techniques are intended to provide learning that supports long-term language and speech development.

Classroom Organization: Technologies

Course Description:
This course provides information on methods and organizational approaches to integrating assistive and learning technologies in the classroom. Computer laboratories,one computer in the classroom and the use of mini labs are explored, evaluated, and discussed. Classroom management of training technologies such as computers, telecommunication and software are presented to help prepare teachers to use technology tools with students in the classroom setting.

Course Description:
This course is designed to teach techniques for conducting and participating in screening assessments for assistive technology devices. The participant will learn to determine assistive technology need that will facilitate an individual's use of functional motor abilities. Assistive Technology: A Family Affair

Course Description:
This course emphasizes the need for family participation in the selection, acquisition and implementation of assistive technology. Techniques to improve active listening, develop a personal philosophy, and identify family inclusion are covered in this course. The use of assistive technology can be an invaluable component in home, educational and vocational settings. For families to become effective case managers, they should be trained in resource availability, have knowledge and skills to be active participants in assistive technology choices. For assistive technology to become an integral part of the lives of individuals with disabilities, families must understand the potential of technology choices.

Young Children: Assistive Technology Applications

Course Description:
This course focuses on a variety of applications of assistive technology appropriate for very young children with disabilities. Selected assistive technologies are shown with children with various disabilities in self-contained and integrated educational environments. Emphasis is placed on the use of assistive technology to enhance performance in the life skills areas of communication, mobility, education, recreation, and independence. The use of assistive technology can be an invaluable component  in planning intervention programs for young children with disabilities. Assistive technology enhances the ability of young children with physical, sensory, or cognitive limitations to exert control over the environment.  For assistive technology to become a part of the lives of young children with disabilities, early childhood service providers must develop an awareness of the potential and applications.

Course Description:
This course will introduce assistive technology devices appropriate for individuals with various disabilities.  Devices which facilitate computer access for individuals will be presented. The participant will learn about specific devices, selection criteria and suggested use of these devices. Special education teachers and other service providers must have a framework of assistive technology knowledge to effectively meet the responsibilities of their position. This course will provide professionals with an awareness of devices and issues that will facilitate computer access for students with disabilities.

Course Description:
This course is designed for participants with previous knowledge of low technology and elementary technology assistive devices. Assistive Technology:  Enhancing and Enabling Activity

Course Description:
This course is designed primarily for occupational therapists who are providing therapeutic services in school settings. The course has four areas of focus: (1) identification of the key elements of a team process to guide decision making, (2) examination of the aspects of sensory processing important to classroom functioning, (3) examination of technologies that might provide support to individuals who experience sensory processing difficulties and(4) use of the arts as a vehicle to encourage activity and as a vehicle for self-expression.
