Global Competence, Cultural Competence, Communicative Competence: Clinical Implications for Speech-Language Pathologists

Presenter: Lilly Cheng, Ph.D.
Dr. Li-Rong Lilly Cheng is Professor in the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and Director of Chinese Studies Institute at San Diego State University (SDSU). Professor Cheng serves as a member of the board of trustees of the Campanile Foundation of SDSU. She is the past chair of the Multicultural Issues Board for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the chair of the Education Committee for the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP).
Professor Cheng served as Associate Dean of the College of Health and Human Services and was the past President of the Phi Beta Delta Chapter at SDSU. She has received many awards from SDSU. She was selected as the outstanding alumnus of Michigan State University. She is also a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Dr. Cheng is the recipient of the 1997 ASHA Award for special contributions to Multicultural Affairs and the recipient of the 2002 Diversity Award from the California Speech & Hearing Association. She is on the editorial board of several major professional journals. She has numerous professional publications and has lectured all over the world. In 2007, she received the best article award from Association of Exceptional Children.
Course Description
This two-day course will present basic concepts in cultural competence and global competence. Strategies for enhancing assessment and intervention in education settings with children will be provided. In addition, strategies for working with adults in medically-related settings will be included. Case studies will be presented to illustrate the importance of cultural competence and global competence.

Presenter: Linda Burkhart
Linda Burkhart is an internationally known pioneer in the field of simplified technology for children with severe challenges. She has developed numerous adapted switches and innovative strategies for using these devices with children. She is the author of a number of books and software titles on topics of assistive technology and augmentative communication.
Linda was a classroom teacher for fifteen years. Then for eight years, she worked as an Augmentative Communication and Assistive Technology Specialist for the Center for Technology in Education - a joint project between the Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland State Department of Education. Currently, Linda works as a private consultant and technology integration specialist.
Course description:
This two-day course will demonstrate the use of a Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display (PODD) approach developed by Gayle Porter (Melbourne, Australia). Generic templates for multi-page “light tech” communication books have been carefully designed to support genuine communication for a variety of functions throughout the day. These templates may be customized for a range of access methods and other individual needs. Multi-modal language learning environments that provide receptive models and expressive opportunities for language development will be emphasized. The workshop will focus on strategies for teaching and using PODD with children and their communication partners. Official two-day introductory PODD Course (max 50 participants).

NOTE: Once you go to TigerTracks and preregister for the course, it will take approximately 24 to 48 hours to be approved. At that time:
- Return to TigerTracks and finalize enrollment
- Select the Enrollment/Payment Tab (last tab on right side of screen) and complete the required information
- Finalize enrollment by May 23, 2012 (11:59 pm)
- If you miss this date, you will need to re-enroll, wait for approval, and then finalize enrollment.
2. The TigerTracks document provides step-by-step directions for applying to the Graduate School. If you have been accepted by the Graduate School within the past 5 years, you may skip Step 1 and move to Step 2.
