The Department of Communication Disorders at Fort Hays State
University has both an undergraduate and graduate program in
Speech-Language Pathology. It is a free-standing department
within the College of Health and Life Sciences.
History
The program was established in the 1951
when Dr. Geneva Herndon began developing course work in the
area
of
speech-language pathology. The first two graduates entered
the field in 1955. Today our alumni are active in the profession
across the United States and in several foreign countries.
The
Department of Communication Disorders and the Geneva Herndon
Clinic are housed on the first floor of
Albertson Hall
on the Fort Hays State University campus.
The Department of Communication Disorders
has a faculty of five full-time doctoral level positions in
the area of speech-language pathology or audiology. However,
at this time two of these positions are filled with one full
time master level instructor and two part-time master level
instructors. In addition, there are two full-time Program
Specialists and two part-time clinical instructors. The most
valuable member of the departmental staff is our Administrative
Specialist, Deb Storer.
The department's undergraduate
program offers a liberal
arts and sciences background as a part of the general educational
experience and a Bachelor of Science degree as preparation
for graduate study in speech-language pathology. A minor in
a related field is strongly encouraged.
The graduate program prepares candidates for the entry-level requirement for the
profession of speech-language pathology. The Master of Science
program is designed to prepare graduates to enter the field
as Clinical
Fellowships (CF) in an educational or healthcare setting. It
is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA)
of the American
Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). All graduates must
meet the ASHA academic and clinical education requirements
for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language
Pathology (CCC-SLP). Learning outcomes are monitored throughout the graduate program for each student using both formative and summative assessment procedures. Click on Assessment link on the left navigational menu to view the assessments completed by the Department.
