Conference Attendance

Several faculty members have been busy attending conferences this past Summer and Fall.

KSHA Convention

Marla Staab, Dr. Amy Finch, Anne Bemis, Jacque Jacobs, and Dr. Marcia Bannister attended the 2008 KSHA Convention in Overland Park.

ASHA Convention

Dr. Fred Britten attended the 2008 ASHA Conference in Chicago.

National Institute on Aging (NIA) Grants Technical Assistance Workshop (TAW)

Phil attended the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Grants Technical Assistance Workshop (TAW) on November 20-21, 2008 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, National Harbor, Maryland.
The Grants TAW is tailored to students and investigators in different stages of their careers. The workshop sessions and presentations are designed to give each participant substantial advice about preparing for a research career in aging and in taking the next step toward building an independent research career. Each individulal participated in workgroup sessions and described, from a podium, planned research proposals to the National Institute on Aging. Ph.D. Aspirants

The Department currently has one faculty member working toward a doctorate degree in speech-language pathology through Wichita State University.

Phil Sechtem plans to complete the POS this spring and hopes to complete the Qualifying Examination this upcoming summer. Information about these items is below. Phil's goal is to complete the Ph.D. in the summer of 2010.

Plan of Study (POS):
The POS includes a listing of doctoral coursework and is an official document that must be approved by the student's Advisory Committee and by the Graduate School. Committee members review proposed coursework and timelines and make recommendations as needed to strengthen the student's Plan. The signed POS serves as an agreement for the student, the Department, and the Graduate School.

Qualifying Examination:
The Qualifying Examination is viewed as an opportunity to: (a) demonstrate mastery of knowledge and integration of information in the student's area(s) of expertise in communication sciences and disorders and related or supplemental areas and (b) provide evidence of readiness to conduct doctoral research. Typically this examination is completed during the term that the student completes the academic requirements.

Recognition

Britten Receives Recognition

Dr. Fred Britten was named as a finalist for the 2008 Pilot Award. The Pilot Award is a prestigious award for teaching at FHSU. Nominations come from graduating seniors. From the nominees, five are named as finalists are are interviewed before a decision is made. This is the second time Dr. Britten has been named as a finalist.

The Spring 2008 Outstanding Service at FHSU was awarded to Dr. Fred Britten. The recipient of this recognition is someone who has established a distinguished service record to the department, the college, the university, and the profession. Dr. Britten was awarded a check in the amount of $500.00 for this recognition.

Phil Sechtem's Abstract Accepted for GRASP

Phil's abstract for the 5th annual Graduate Research and Scholarly Projects (GRASP) symposium has been accepted. He has been selected to give an oral presentation at the symposium on May 1, 2009 in the Hughes Metropolitan Complex. The Symposium is designed to (i) spread awareness on campus about the state-of-the-art research and scholarly projects being conducted; (ii) showcase the world-class graduate research to the wider community; (iii) highlight the participation of graduate students in research/projects and recognize their contributions to their fields; (iv) recognize research mentoring of the faculty advisors; and (v) provide a forum for graduate students to practice presentation skills in research and scholarly activities. Service

Britten Continues Service to ASHA

After completing a four-year term on the Council of Academic Accreditation (CAA) with ASHA, Dr. Britten has returned to being an active site visitor. In addition to being a current member of the Committee on Nominations and Elections (CNE) for 2008 and 2009, he was recently appointed to a three-year term on the ASHA Board of Ethics.
