Careers for Communication Studies Graduates

A wide range of job opportunities exist for individuals holding degrees in the field of communication. Some of the possibilities are advertising, teaching, politics, government and business management, military careers, newspapers and news magazines, theatre management, acting, directing, public relations, and human resource development. All career choices require you to be an effective communicator, listener, and speaker.

"Studying theatre at FHSU was an ideal situation for me. The department was large enough to provide the competition that makes one strive to be better, and small enough that all of us did some of everything as we worked on productions. By the time I completed my bachelor's and master's degrees, I had acted and directed, stage managed plays, operas and musicals, designed sound and costumes, built sets and props, hung and focused lights, and studied makeup, hair, and wigs. I left Fort Hays as a theatre generalist, which has stood me in good stead in the jobs I've held (one year as Designer/TD at Fort Hays, and then as Director of Theartre at both Colby Community College and Johnson County Community College)."

"After graduation I interned with the NBC-TV affiliate in Topeka and I immediately saw the relative value of my education from the FHSU Communication Department. I felt better prepared for the workforce than graduates I observed from other institutions. Thanks to FHSU, my efforts were rewarded with my first employment opportunity. The faculty was phenomenal when I was a student. David Lefurgey was the best instructor I ever had at any level of education. Jack Heather and Chuck Wilhelm also played an integral role in helping me prepare for my career."

After doing several internships with Goldman Sachs & Co. in New York, NY, I realized that Public Relations was the field that would complement my strengths and talents. The education that I gained from the FHSU Communication Department is of the highest quality. Professors and students work together almost as a team when it comes to learning. The faculty in the Communication Department have a strong dedication to their students; when you walk into their offices, they drop what they are doing, and they are all yours! The faculty is a very strong point for the department because they truly care about the future of their students; they are always willing to listen, share experiences and give trusted advice. I believe that the knowledge that I gained from this department helped me to be recruited for a position at my current place of employment long before my graduation date.
