Teaching
Philosophy
Teaching is not my profession … it’s my PASSION.
I’m very thankful for the position I hold. The opportunity
to help students’ shape and mold their educational lives
is an honor, a privilege, and a very serious responsibility. At
the core of my teaching philosophy is a real commitment to the
student. I sincerely believe that educational institutions exist
for students rather than students existing for educational institutions.
There are eight teaching philosophies I strongly believe in and
try to practice on a daily basis:
- First, I believe it is my responsibility to help students develop
character. I believe students develop character by taking on
difficult tasks and constantly testing themselves, by setting
high goals and being willing to risk failure in the attempt to
attain these goals.
- Second, I believe it is my responsibility to help students
develop courage (that state of mind that enables them to encounter
difficulties and apprehension with firmness and without fear)
because I believe fear of failure is one thing that keeps many
students from achieving the things they are capable of achieving.
- Third, I believe it is my responsibility to help students develop
commitment by helping them understand that commitment is probably
the most important factor that distinguishes those who ultimately
succeed from those who ultimately fail.
- Fourth, I believe it is my responsibility
to help students understand that motivation is the glue that
holds character, courage and commitment together. I believe
it is my role to help the student understand that motivation
is internal rather than external and, that it is an everyday
thing that ultimately allows them to control their own destinies!
- Fifth, I believe it is my responsibility
to help students develop research and critical thinking skills … to
encourage them to not necessarily always see things how they
are but to attempt to see things how they could be.
- Sixth, I believe it is my responsibility
to help students develop strong communication skills … written, spoken, and unspoken. And,
in addition, help them develop an appreciation for other of the
liberal arts.
- Seventh, I believe my responsibility extends
outside the classroom. Students need mentors and role models. I
also believe academic and personal advising is a most important
teaching responsibility.
- Eighth, I believe it is my responsibility to encourage students
to challenge and expand their technological skills and abilities.
All of my teaching experiences at Fort Hays
State University have been very positive. I produce between 800
and 1,200 student credit hours each year and love every minute
of it. I truly can’t
think of anything I would rather be doing with my life.
