Personal Statement
I don’t believe in making up quotes. In fact my insistence that making up quotes is unethical once cost me a public relations job. That’s the journalist in me. Prospective employers, however, can be assured that Fort Hays State University’s public relations students will graduate with a strong
appreciation for AP Style and the inverted pyramid. Again, the journalist in me!

I earned both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees from FHSU. My undergraduate degree is in pre-med, my master’s in communication with an emphasis in journalism. I worked at The Hays Daily News as the society editor and as a feature writer from 1989 until August 1993 when I began teaching full time at FHSU. During the 1996-1997 school year, I taught communication classes (including Bethany’s first news writing class) at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan. Following that one-year temporary position, I returned to FHSU to teach public relations and advertising classes.

At the time I returned to FHSU, the advertising/public relations program consisted of two PR classes and one (occasionally two) advertising classes. In the fall of 2005 a new curriculum, with a full menu of both advertising and public relations classes, was implemented and a second faculty member was hired. The 2006 Navigator Award for advising excellence at FHSU and the 2006 first place National Federation of Press Women Research Award for “Communication at the Heart of a Crisis: A Case Study” are my most coveted awards in my 10 plus years of teaching at FHSU.

My research interests include crisis, religious and political communication.

I have been married to the same guy (Ron) for 36 years, have two sons, Dane and Brett, and the sweetest, cutest, brightest, most talented 6-year-old granddaughter (Jessica) in the whole world
