Using FHSU Mail
** Access to Scatcat E-Mail System to be Discontinued December 31, 2012 **
Effective June 1, 2012, FHSU's "Scatcat" e-mail system has moved to a Google Apps (Gmail) platform:
- FHSU faculty/staff (Lotus Notes) e-mail accounts are NOT affected by this change.
- Other Scatcat services, such as your existing My Documents folder and web pages are NOT affected by this change.
- Your FHSU Mail address is: tigertracksusername@mail.fhsu.edu
- "mail" is simply replacing "scatcat" in the e-mail address
- Messages sent to your old Scatcat e-mail address are being delivered to your new FHSU Mail address for an undetermined amount of time, so we encourage you to start giving everyone your new FHSU Mail address now.
Why was this change made?
There are many reasons! Over 60% of universities nationwide are now using this online environment, and after evaluating various options, FHSU believes this is also the right move for us. Some of the benefits include:
- a variety of free online features and applications. For example, Google Docs provides free access to document, spreadsheet, and presentation software and easy-to-use collaboration tools.
- more space! The Google mail account has 25 GB of space (compared to the old system's 100 MiB).
- less administrative overhead. Another benefit will be a reduction of manpower resources needed for administration of mail to allow technical staff to focus on other projects.

What do I need to do?
Beginning June 1, 2012:
- Use your TigerTracks Username and Password to log in to your FHSU Mail account. Your account can be accessed in the following ways:
- Log in to TigerTracks at tigertracks.fhsu.edu and click on the Webmail tab.
- Go directly to mail.google.com/a/mail.fhsu.edu
- Start giving everyone your new FHSU Mail address (tigertracksusername@mail.fhsu.edu).
Note: Delivery of messages sent to your old Scatcat e-mail address into the new FHSU Mail account will be discontinued at an undetermined date. Prior notice will be given before this takes place.
- Log in to your FHSU Mail account and review the default Mail Settings. To do this, click on the "gear" icon in the upper right corner and choose Mail Settings or Settings. For example, some people prefer to change the Conversation View setting to off. For help deciding how to configure your settings, click on the Learn More links next to each option.
- You may also want to recreate any filtering rules you used in your Scatcat account, or set up your mobile device settings.

What will happen to old messages that were in my Scatcat account before the change?
For users in the following categories, folders and messages in the Scatcat account were automatically transferred into the FHSU Mail account:
- Scatcat E-mail Account has been accessed since Jan. 1, 2012
- Account does not have any filter rules or forwarding in place (from Scatcat to a personal address)
Note: Due to the timing of this process, some duplication of messages may appear in your FHSU Mail account.
If your e-mail will not automatically be transferred, two options are available to you until December 31, 2012:
- You may transfer messages from your Scatcat Inbox only (messages in sub-folders will not transfer) to your FHSU Mail account using Gmail’s Mail Fetcher.
- You may request to have FHSU transfer your Scatcat folders and messages by going to the Webmail tab in TigerTracks and selecting the transfer option.

What is the last day I can access previously received e-mail messages in the Scatcat account?
- Beginning June 1, 2012, any new messages sent to your Scatcat address will ONLY be delivered to your new FHSU Mail Inbox. They will no longer be received in your Scatcat Inbox (Webmail).
- The ability to access Scatcat messages received prior to the transition, using Webmail or other e-mail programs, will be discontinued on December 31, 2012*
*Note: This date is subject to change if unforeseen technical issues result in an earlier retirement date for the Scatcat server.

I am currently forwarding my Scatcat account to my personal e-mail address. Will my messages still be forwarded?
I have been using filtering rules in my Scatcat account. Will these rules be transferred to my new FHSU Mail account?
- No. Unfortunately, existing forwarding and filtering rules for FHSU Scatcat e-mail accounts will not be able to be automatically transferred. This means that as of June 1, 2012, forwarding of messages from your Scatcat address to your personal address will be discontinued. Messages sent to the Scatcat address will ONLY be delivered to the FHSU Gmail Inbox.
- If you have existing messages in your Scatcat account that you wish to transfer to your FHSU Mail account, you will need to go to the Webmail tab in TigerTracks and select the transfer option.
- If you wish to have new messages forwarded from your FHSU Mail address to your personal address after this date, you will need to set up forwarding in the Gmail system.
- Our experience has shown that Google's spam filtering is very good. We recommend using your FHSU Mail account for a while to see if you need to set up filtering rules. If so, see Using filters.

Will my contacts from the address book in Scatcat also be migrated with my mail and folder?
There is no option to move the contacts with an automated process. If you would like to keep the contacts you have saved in your Scatcat address book you will need to manually copy down the information and enter it into your FHSU Mail contacts.

How do I transfer filter/spam settings from Scatcat to Google?
The spam filter used by Google is much more aggressive and accurate than the one employed by the Scatcat server. Filter rules set up for your Scatcat account cannot be automatically transferred over to your FHSU Mail account, but if you would like to set up the same rules, here is a tutorial on Using filters.

Why do my sent messages that were migrated from Scatcat look like they were sent to "me"?
This is a byproduct from the transfer of your messages and folders. There is no way to change the view in your sent folder but if you open the message it will reveal the true recipient(s).
