Off-Campus Access To FHSU Library Resources
Using Internet Explorer 6.0+
With Windows XP or Higher

These procedures provide the basic steps necessary for current Fort Hays State University students, faculty, and staff to access restricted resources from the Forsyth Library Web site on a computer connected to the Internet through a service provider or network other than Fort Hays State University. Students must be currently enrolled in order to use restricted library resources.

Note: These instructions are not necessary if you are using a computer connected directly to FHSU's campus network (LAN) or wireless network (TigerNet).

Internet Browser Recommendations:

We recommend using the newest version of Firefox or Internet Explorer. Firefox can be downloaded free from www.mozilla.com. We do not recommend using other browsers, such as MSN Explorer, Netscape, or AOL.

Procedures:

Note: An active Internet connection is not necessary for steps 1-5 of these instructions (you may work offline).

  1. Open Internet Explorer.

  2. A browser window will appear.  Click on Tools, and then Internet Options.  Next, click on the Connections tab.

  3. Follow the step below that applies to the type of Internet connection you are using:

    1. If you are using a LAN (Local Area Network), DSL, or Cable modem: Click the LAN settings button.

    2. If you are using a dial-up connection:  In the Dial-Up settings window, click once on the dial-up icon that you are using to connect, then click the Settings button.

  4. In the Settings window, click once to place a check mark in the box next to Use automatic configuration script, then carefully enter or copy and paste the following address into the Address box: http://libproxy.fhsu.edu:3279/fhsulib.pac

  5. Note: If there is a check mark in the box next to Automatically detect settings, click once on the box to REMOVE the check mark.

  6. Click OK to exit the Settings window, and OK once more to exit the Internet Options window.  Next, close Internet Explorer and then reopen it to ensure that the changes take effect.

Before continuing, you must establish an active Internet connection.

  1. To access a resource, open Internet Explorer and go to: www.fhsu.edu/forsyth_lib/
Click Research Resources, and then browse to select the resource of your choice.

  2. If the resource you chose is a restricted resource, a gray Connect to libproxy.fhsu.edu pop-up dialog box will appear. Use your TigerTracks login to enter the resource. Your TigerTracks login must be activated before it can be used. If you have not yet activated it, or if you need to recover your password, you may do so by going to: tigertracks.fhsu.edu/register/

Note: Students must be currently enrolled in order to use restricted library resources.

Note: Your login information will be retained for any restricted resources accessed while Internet Explorer is open. If you close Internet Explorer and then reopen it, you will be prompted for your username and password again.

If you have problems…

If this is the first time you have attempted to use off-campus access to FHSU Library Resources and you are experiencing problems, please contact the CTC HelpDesk before performing further troubleshooting. This will allow us to verify that the permissions for your TigerTracks account have been set up to allow library resources access and to provide any further assistance as needed.

If you have accessed library resources in the past, and are performing this setup again, review these procedures and check to make sure you have followed all steps as instructed and that the configuration script address has been entered correctly.  Also, make sure your username and password have been entered correctly when trying to access a resource.

If you still encounter problems after reviewing these procedures, see the Troubleshooting Suggestions for Accessing FHSU Library Resources document located at www.fhsu.edu/ctc/helpdesk/libreshelp.shtml

For further assistance, call the Fort Hays State University CTC HelpDesk at (785) 628-5276. Before calling for problem assistance, write down the steps you have done so far and any error messages you may have received. For assistance using the library resources once you have access to them, contact Forsyth Library. During normal business hours, please call (785) 628-5262; after hours, call (785) 628-5283.
