Managing Your Scatcat File Space

Here is some information about the space limitations that apply to FHSU student Scatcat accounts and how to manage your file space.

Space Limits and Recommendations

We recommend that everyone with a Scatcat account check their e-mail at least once a week so they will be informed of any maintenance, service, or policy changes that may occur. We recommend removing unnecessary messages and files regularly.

A 20 MB "Inbox" limit applies to messages residing in your e-mail Inbox on the server. Once this limit has been reached, any new messages will be returned undeliverable. To avoid reaching this limit, messages can be deleted from the Inbox, moved out of the Inbox into other folders, or transferred to your personal computer. When using POP3 settings in an e-mail program (such as Outlook Express), this can only be accomplished by configuring the program to "remove messages from the server."

When an account is over quota the Delete option may not work. In this case, you should use the Expunge option in TigerTracks Webmail to delete messages.. The Expunge option will immediately and permanently remove messages from your account, while the Delete option sends messages to your Trash folder, which actually adds towards your space usage.

A 60 MB "Account" limit applies to the total amount of file space residing on the server for an actively enrolled student's account. This includes the Sent and Trash folders, all Web pages, personal files (including the H: drive / My Documents folder), and e-mail messages remaining on the server (excluding those in the inbox). When an account exceeds this limit, a seven-day grace period period begins. This gives you time to remove messages or files from the account. If your file space usage does not drop below the limit by the end of the grace period, you will not be able to save any additional files in the account until space usage is brought back below 60 MB.

A File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program can be used to delete files from your account. Instructions for Transferring Files to and from your Scatcat Account are available in the E-Mail and Web Pages section of our Web site.

You can view the amount of space being used by your e-mail folders by logging in to the TigerTracks portal at tigertracks.fhsu.edu, clicking on the Webmail tab, clicking on the Folders icon, and then clicking Check Folder Filespace. Please note that this will not show the space used in your My Documents folder, which is normally accessed by using our on-campus labs (the H: drive). The My Documents folder is part of the 60 MB account limit.

If there is a course-related reason requiring you to retain your files, please have your instructor send an e-mail explaining your needs to us at helpdesk@fhsu.edu.
