Beware of Fake “Support Team” E-Mails!
Recently, FHSU users have encountered multiple fake e-mails claiming to be from the “Tiger Support Team” or the “Scatcat Support Team”. They make a variety of claims, ranging from threats of discontinuation of service because of spam to requests for the user to verify password or service changes. When some users replied to these messages, the replies were then sent to users on various FHSU e-mail address lists – not to the fake “Support” addresses. Clicking on the attachments resulted in further spreading of the messages.
These messages were NOT sent by Fort Hays State University; they were generated by a virus. Although they appear to be very clever, they are similar to many other spam messages that most people receive every day. Please DELETE any messages of this nature and do NOT click on any attachments or links.
Staying informed and knowing how to identify harmful e-mails is your best defense against viruses and deceptive messages. Please see the following links for E-Mail Safety Tips and other helpful information:

CTC HelpDesk Web Site Earns National Recognition
The CTC HelpDesk staff has worked hard to create a Web site that is attractive, user friendly, and comprehensive. We are pleased to announce that our efforts have been rewarded! Our site has been selected by the Association for Communications Technology Professionals in Higher Education as a “Member Site to See” for the fourth quarter of 2005. The topic of this quarter’s competition was Supporting Student Use of Technology.
Current Student HelpDesk Consultants who have made contributions to the site in its present design are DJ West, Curt Wilson, Katie Sluyter, Tom Zimmerman, Arieh Levy, and Matt Koochel. HelpDesk Center Supervisor Nancy Cunningham coordinates and oversees site development.
“The school’s site [www.fhsu.edu/ctc/helpdesk/] was selected based on the criteria of content delivery, timeliness, ease of use, accessibility, and graphic appeal,” according to Anna Hines, chair of the ACUTA Web Site Recognition Task Force.
The site will be featured on the ACUTA home page (http://www.acuta.org) after December 1, and the University will be recognized for this achievement in the December issue of ACUTA e-News and at ACUTA’s Annual Conference in San Diego , California , July 23-27, 2006 .
Addressing voice, data and video communications needs for higher education, ACUTA serves nearly 800 institutions of higher education and 2,000 communications technology professionals from across the United States and Canada as well as Australia and New Zealand .

TigerNet Wireless Internet Now Available Across Campus
TigerNet wireless Internet service is now available in most buildings across campus. To view current wireless locations, setup instructions, and other information, see www.fhsu.edu/ctc/helpdesk/wireless_info.shtml.
A wireless card and Windows XP or Macintosh OS X (10.3 or higher) are required to connect. An 802.11a/b/g wireless card is recommended. For information about wireless card recommendations or if you are considering the purchase of a computer, you should view FHSU's computer purchase recommendations, located at www.fhsu.edu/mobilecomputing/students.shtml.
There is no charge for wireless Internet service. It is available to current faculty, staff, and students. Students should bring a photo ID to the CTC HelpDesk (TH113) to obtain a wireless ID and password. Faculty and staff should use their FHSU network (Windows) login to connect. If you do not have a network login or if your network login does not allow access, you should submit a CTC Request for Services to the Network and Servers section (through Lotus Notes) to request wireless access.

Store and Transfer Files Using Your Scatcat Account
Did you know that you can use your Scatcat account to store files? Saving files on Scatcat allows you to access them from any location with Internet access. It is also convenient to use Scatcat for keeping backup copies or for storing files that are too large to fit on a floppy disk.
Two CTC HelpDesk documents are available to assist you with this task: Transferring Files to and from Your FHSU Scatcat Account Using WS_FTP (for Windows users) and Transferring Files to and from Your FHSU Scatcat Account Using Transmit (for Macintosh users). They are located in the E-Mail and Web Pages section of the CTC HelpDesk Web site. WS_FTP may be used on Windows systems and Transmit may be used on Macintosh systems. They can be used for transferring any type of file (including Web page files). A freeware version of WS_FTP can be downloaded from ftp://www.fhsu.edu/win95+/. Transmit may be downloaded from www.panic.com/transmit/.
You can store up to 20 MB in your Scatcat e-mail inbox and 60 MB in the account (including all Web pages, personal files, and e-mail messages no longer in the inbox). Files saved in the My Documents folder using computers in on-campus labs that require the Scatcat login are also stored in the Scatcat account. For information about how to avoid problems caused by exceeding your allocated Scatcat space, see Managing your Scatcat File Space .
