Computing Survival Guide

This page is currently under construction/revision. Call the CTC HelpDesk at 5276 if you need assistance.

Following is a list of hints and tips that may make using your computer at FHSU easier.

What is my PC’s name?
The new naming convention is Department-Lotus Notes Name-Number (if more than one computer). Examples: Eng-jdoe or Eng-jdoe-2

Where can the list of Department abbreviations be found?
The list of Department abbreviations can be found on the following web page: http://tiger.fhsu.edu/ctc/Deptpref.nsf . Be sure to use the capital D in the URL. You can also make an educated guess using the Find command (see below).

How do I verify my PC’s name?
If you are running Windows 95 or 98, right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon, then select Properties, and then click on Identification. On Windows 2000, right-click on the My Computer icon, and choose Properties; click the Network Identification tab, and then click Properties. On all versions of Windows, when finished, click Cancel until you return to your desktop. During this time of transition, your PC may or may not follow the new naming convention.

Why is this important?
If you wish to share a file with others or to access it from a Mediated Classroom, you need to know the name (and appropriate directory) of your computer.

How do I find a computer on the network?
You might try Network Neighborhood first, looking in the FHSU domain. If that does not work, use the Find command. In Windows 95 or 98, press the Start button, then choose the Find option, and then choose the option labeled Computer. In Windows 2000, click on Start, Search, For Files or Folders. In the Search portion of the window, scroll down and choose Computers.

If you know the name of the computer that you wish to find, enter it. If you do not know the name of the computer, start by entering the Lotus Notes name of the user. Double-click Find Now (on Windows 95/98) or Search Now (on Windows 2000). The search engine should locate and display the computers that have that user name contained in the name field. Once the search engine displays the computer you are seeking, double-click on the name and if the user has given public access to any folders on it, you will be able to gain access.

How do I access shared files?
Apart from using the Find command, the most reliable way is to use the Run command. From the Start icon (in Windows), click on Run and then enter something modeled on the following example: \\dept-jdoe or \\computername (if the computer you wish to access has not yet been converted to the new network logon -- as some offices may not have been converted at this time). That will display any shared files or other shared resources. If you know the name of the directory that is shared (for example, "pub"), you can access it directly by entering: \\dept-jdoe\pub\ .

Why does Network Neighborhood not display my PC?
Note that Network Neighborhood is not always reliable. Some machines on the network will not appear when you try to browse the network. Microsoft admits (in the fine print) that Network Neighborhood is unreliable, and MS recommends the above ways of accessing and finding PCs on the network. Most machines will now be (or will be soon) in the FHSU domain. Knowing the naming convention will assist you in accessing a given machine using the Run command.

What if none of this works?
There are other things that must be in place for network access. Your computer needs the proper WINS numbers to identify servers that track and translate names and addresses. Network cards can be faulty. Your PC may be configured to use DHCP instead of a static IP address. For these and other network issues, call Micro Services (4021) for help.

What do I need to do to use a laptop on the network in the Mediated Classrooms?
If you are a faculty member (or guest speaker) and need to use a laptop for network access in a Mediated Classroom, send a CTC Request for Services to the Network and Servers section on Lotus Notes. We need to register your Mac address. If you have a guest speaker that will be using the Internet from a laptop, we need to know the same kind of information.

How do I find a student E-mail address?
You should receive a picture roster with the student’s E-mail address on it. Otherwise, you can find the E-mail address on the web by going to http://scatcat.fhsu.edu/email/ and clicking on the student E-mail search.

How do my students activate their new Scatcat account?
Go to http://scatcat.fhsu.edu/activate/ and complete the on-line registration form.

Where are the computer labs located on campus?
Go to http://www.fhsu.edu/ctc/labs/clip.html to find a listing of the labs on campus or pick up a lab brochure from the CTC HelpDesk in Tomanek Hall 113.

How do I find FHSU computer use policies, answers to E-mail questions, and other information supplied by the Helpdesk?
Go to the FHSU web page (http://www.fhsu.edu), select CTC HelpDesk from the drop-down Search Menu, and then click on Go or go directly to the HelpDesk web page at http://www.fhsu.edu/ctc/helpdesk/ and then choose the desired topic. The HelpDesk staff posts much helpful information available there.

Who sets up listservs?
Send a CTC Request for Services to the Network and Servers section on Lotus Notes.

Who do I call for E-mail problems (sending, receiving, other)?
First call the HelpDesk number (5276). If they do not have the answer that you need, they will transfer you to someone who can help you.

Where do I get my Blackboard sign on?
We maintain the hardware and software releases, but we do not maintain the user accounts. Call CTELT (4194).

How do I get a voice mail account?
Contact Tom Webb (4488) or send a Request for Telecommunications Services on Lotus Notes.

Where do I get Dialup information?
To acquire a dialup account and receive information about configuring your dialup access, stop by the CTC HelpDesk in Tomanek Hall 113 or call 5276.

Who do I call if I need help in a Mediated Classroom?
Call Jack Jackson (5841) or Odus Trober (5287).

Where do I go if I need to check out a laptop, a projector, or other equipment?
Call Media Checkout (5521) to check for availability or stop by Tomanek Hall 113 to reserve the needed equipment or visit http://www.fhsu.edu/ctc/media_checkout/ to see a list and description of the available equipment.

How do I learn how to use the equipment in the Mediated Classrooms?
Watch for advertisements for training sessions for the Mediated Classrooms on Lotus Notes or call Jack Jackson (5841) for information.

How do I get a Lotus Notes ID?
Have your secretary send a CTC Request for Services to the Network and Servers section on Lotus Notes that includes the following information: the name, Social Security Number, department name and number, title, and indicate whether the new employee is faculty, staff or a student employee, office location, office phone number and start date. Also, include installation instructions and whether the employee shares a computer with other Lotus Notes users.

How do I get a CICS ID?
Send a CTC Request for Services to the Information Center section on Lotus Notes. Include the systems for which you need CICS security.

How do I get a Network ID?
Have your secretary send a CTC Request for Services to the Network and Servers section on Lotus Notes and include the name, the last four digits of their SSN, the department, what rights the ID needs in regard to what shared directories they will need to be accessing, and very importantly: if they are replacing anyone. If they are replacing anyone, we can just rename the ID rather than create a new one and delete the old one because we don’t have to recreate all the permissions for all of the different accesses that they may need.

Also it is good to know if an ID can be deleted when an employee leaves a position.

Who do I call if My Network Password is Not Working?
Call Micro Services (4021) or Cheryl Helget (4119).
