What
is my PC’s name?
The new naming convention is Department-Lotus Notes Name-Number
(if more than one computer). Examples: Eng-jdoe or
Eng-jdoe-2
Where can the
list of Department abbreviations be found?
The list of Department abbreviations can be found on the following
web page: http://tiger.fhsu.edu/ctc/Deptpref.nsf
. Be sure to use the capital D in the URL. You can
also make an educated guess using the Find command (see below).
How do I verify
my PC’s name?
If you are running Windows 95 or 98, right-click on the Network
Neighborhood icon, then select Properties, and
then click on Identification. On Windows 2000, right-click
on the My Computer icon, and choose Properties;
click the Network Identification tab, and then click
Properties. On all versions of Windows, when finished,
click Cancel until you return to your desktop. During
this time of transition, your PC may or may not follow the
new naming convention.
Why is this
important?
If you wish to share a file with others or to access it from
a Mediated Classroom, you need to know the name (and appropriate
directory) of your computer.
How do I find
a computer on the network?
You might try Network Neighborhood first, looking in the FHSU
domain. If that does not work, use the Find command.
In Windows 95 or 98, press the Start button, then choose
the Find option, and then
choose the option labeled Computer.
In Windows 2000, click
on Start, Search, For Files or Folders. In the Search
portion of the window, scroll down and choose Computers.
If
you know the name of the computer that you wish to find, enter
it. If you do not know the name of the computer, start by
entering the Lotus Notes name of the user. Double-click Find
Now (on Windows 95/98) or Search Now (on Windows
2000). The search engine should locate and display the computers
that have that user name contained in the name field. Once
the search engine displays the computer you are seeking, double-click
on the name and if the user has given public access to any
folders on it, you will be able to gain access.
How
do I access shared files?
Apart from using the Find command, the
most reliable way is to use the Run command. From the
Start icon (in Windows), click on Run and then
enter something modeled on the following example: \\dept-jdoe
or \\computername (if the computer you wish
to access has not yet been converted to the new network logon
-- as some offices may not have been converted at this time).
That will display any shared files or other shared resources.
If you know the name of the directory that is shared (for
example, "pub"), you can access it directly by entering: \\dept-jdoe\pub\
.
Why
does Network Neighborhood not display my PC?
Note that Network Neighborhood is not always
reliable. Some machines on the network will not appear when
you try to browse the network. Microsoft admits (in the fine
print) that Network Neighborhood is unreliable, and MS recommends
the above ways of accessing and finding PCs on the network.
Most machines will now be (or will be soon) in the FHSU
domain. Knowing the naming convention will assist you in accessing
a given machine using the Run command.
What
if none of this works?
There are other things that must be in place
for network access. Your computer needs the proper WINS numbers
to identify servers that track and translate names and addresses.
Network cards can be faulty. Your PC may be configured to
use DHCP instead of a static IP address. For these and other
network issues, call Micro Services (4021) for help.
What
do I need to do to use a laptop on the network in the Mediated
Classrooms?
If you are a faculty member (or guest speaker)
and need to use a laptop for network access in a Mediated
Classroom, send a CTC Request for Services to the Network
and Servers section on Lotus Notes. We need to register your
Mac address. If you have a guest speaker that will be using
the Internet from a laptop, we need to know the same kind
of information.
How
do I find a student E-mail address?

and then click on Go or go directly to the HelpDesk

How
do I get a Network ID?
Have your secretary send a CTC Request for Services
to the Network and Servers section on Lotus Notes and include
the name, the last four digits of their SSN, the department,
what rights the ID needs in regard to what shared directories
they will need to be accessing, and very importantly: if they
are replacing anyone. If they are replacing anyone, we can
just rename the ID rather than create a new one and delete
the old one because we don’t have to recreate all the permissions
for all of the different accesses that they may need.
Also
it is good to know if an ID can be deleted when an employee
leaves a position.
