FHSU Support Retirement Statement

Microsoft has officially retired public and technical support, including security updates for these operating systems:

Windows 98 - All Editions
Windows Me
Windows XP - Service Pack 1 or older

Read Microsoft's End of Support Statement

Microsoft has transitioned Windows 2000 into Extended Support, and no longer provides complimentary support options, design change requests, and non-security hotfixes.

Apple has ceased support for Macintosh Operating Systems OS 8x and older. Many University systems, including the TigerNet wireless network require OS X (10.3) or higher.

Mac OS 8.1, 8.5, 8.6, 9.0/9.1
Read Apple's Earlier Operating System Support Statement

Due to these changes, Fort Hays State University has also ended support for these operating systems. The HelpDesk will continue to offer basic support for University systems, but is unable to assist with problems requiring installation/reinstallation of programs or configuration instructions specific to Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP Service Pack 1 or older and any Macintosh OS older than OS X 10.3.

Existing support documents and content, however, will continue to be available through each developer's product support Web site. These Web sites will continue to host a wealth of previous How-to, Troubleshooting, and Configuration content for anyone who may need self-service.

Microsoft has retired support for these products because they are outdated and can expose customers to security risks. Microsoft recommends that customers who are still running Windows 98 or Windows Me upgrade to a newer, more secure Microsoft operating system, such as Windows XP or Vista, as soon as possible.

Consumers who upgrade to Windows XP or Vista report improved security, richer functionality, and increased productivity.

Windows XP Service Pack 1 Users

To enhance the security of your computer and to continue to receive updates and support for Windows XP, we recommend you upgrade your computer, for free, to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
