Fort Hays State University > About FHSU > Division of Student Affairs > Diversity Affairs > Diversity At Fhsu
The world is getting smaller all the time. At FHSU, we want to build and support a diverse, inclusive campus community that recognizes and celebrates our differences. How do we accomplish this?First, we offer programs and activities to help people feel welcomed, valued and respected at FHSU, to promote value differences. By better understanding what makes people, cultures and genders different, you learn how to interact effectively with a wide variety of people, which builds community and prepares you for the working world.Individuals who feel welcomed, valued and respected and who feel good about themselves and who they are through self-awareness, are better able to interact effectively with others who are different, which can help to build an inclusive community. The cultural diversity of the United States is truly astounding, as many different ethnic and cultural groups have contributed to the social, economic and cultural values of our society. This has been true throughout our history, even though many of our school books have not always taught that fact. In fact, the very idea that cultural diversity should be taught has only been promoted in the last few years.
The bottom line is that when we fully recognize that America is great because of the contributions of the many; then we as a people will be even more united in our common goals, and even more proud to be American citizens.
