The Department of Educational Administration and Counseling
offers the Master of Science Degree in Education in two subject
areas, Counselor Education and Educational Administration, plus
the Educational Specialist in Educational Administration.
Counselor
Education (Master of Science)
The graduate program in counseling is designed to
1) provide training in the specialty areas of school or community;
and 2) provide a broad foundation in counseling as preparation for
counselor licensure in the State of Kansas. The coursework is offered
at the six western Kansas community college sites which receive
full motion interactive television from the FHSU campus or on weekends.
The program is offered primarily through evening courses during
fall and spring semesters or on weekends and daytime during the
months of June and/or July on campus.
The program in school counseling requires 48 semester
credits of coursework. The curriculum prepares students for endorsement
by the Kansas State Department of Education as school counselors.
The community counseling program also requires 48
semester credits of coursework. The curriculum prepares students
to work in applied settings such as community mental health agencies.
Students interested in becoming licensed professional
counselors in the State of Kansas should contact the Kansas Behavioral
Science Regulatory Board or counseling faculty.
Educational
Administration (Master of Science)
This graduate program is designed to prepare students
to become endorsed as school building administrators (principals)
in the State of Kansas. The program is offered at the six western
Kansas community college sites which receive full motion interactive
television from the FHSU campus. It is offered through evening courses
in the fall and spring and during the daytime in June and/or July
on the FHSU campus.
The educational administration program requires 37

for building leadership endorsement by the Kansas State Board of
Education.
Specialist
in Education Degree: Educational Administration
The Specialist in Education degree is an advanced
graduate degree designed to provide the graduate student a definite
and integrated professional program of study beyond the Master’s
Degree Program in Educational Administration. The degree requires
advanced study between the master’s degree and the doctoral
degree, both in time and depth with objectives identifiable and
distinct from each of these.
The program is normally 30-33 semester hours in length
beyond the master’s degree. A student must be certified as
a building level principal prior to starting Specialist in Education:
Educational Administration Degree courses.
The program prepares students for district leadership
endorsement by the Kansas State Department of Education.
KSDE endorsement as counselors or building leadership
is also available on a non-degree basis under certain conditions.
