HAYS, KS -- Dr. Tom Johansen, associate professor of economics and
finance, has been named by a faculty recognition committee as the
recipient of the Fort Hays State University’s Mediated Classroom
Teacher Award for his performance in the College of Business and
Leadership.
The faculty recognition program rewards outstanding teacher innovators
and outstanding mediated classroom teachers from each of the four
colleges of the university. Two other special awards -- Teacher/Innovator
of the Year and Faculty Advisor of the Year -- are also part of
the program. Recipients are selected by a committee chaired or appointed
by the respective college deans.
One award is given each month over the period August through May.
Johansen is the recipient of the Mediated Classroom Teacher Award
for January. He received a check for $300 and a university lapel
pin that signifies teaching excellence. Two-thirds of the financial
award is provided by the university and the other third comes from
Commerce Bank of Hays, which established a fund with the university
to help recognize outstanding faculty teaching.
To win the Mediated Classroom Teacher Award from the College of
Business and Leadership, a faculty member must use innovative approaches
for instruction and show evidence of original contribution and increased
learning effectiveness.
Speaking on behalf of the selection committee, Dr. Ralph Gamble,
professor of economics and finance, said, "Tom has used computers
and the Web to present his courses to on-campus students for many
years. He took the lead in directing stock market trading games
in order to teach finance and investment topics.
"He was the driving force behind the departmental, college
and university promotional videos, and in the acquisition of the
plasma displays and IT units on floor one, McCartney Hall,"
Gamble said. "The list goes on.
"He should be recognized for what
he truly is: an outstanding user of media in teaching," said
Gamble.
After instructing at FHSU from 1981-1983, Johansen left to teach
at the University of Northern Colorado. He returned to FHSU in 1989
as an assistant professor of finance. Johansen received both his
bachelor's and master's degrees from FHSU and his doctorate from
Oklahoma State University.
