National Student Exchange
Information About Exchange

National Student Exchange (NSE) is a wonderful way of experiencing life at a different college or university in the United States, District of Columbia, Virgin Islands, Guam, or Puerto Rico. NSE is a domestic exchange program that provides FHSU students an opportunity to attend one of the over 180 NSE member schools for a maximum of one year and pay your tuition and fees at Fort Hays State University. Students that receive financial assistance are eligible to participate in the program since their financial assistance goes toward tuition and fees, and any aid in excess of that amount is sent to the student.

The program is best suited for sophomores and some juniors who have flexibility in their academic program. Other students should consult with their departmental advisor or the NSE coordinator about the advantages and disadvantages of going on exchange. International and graduate students are not eligible to participate.

To learn more about participating in the NSE program through Fort Hays State University……

1. Pick up an information booklet. The NSE Directory of Exchange Opportunities is available from Student Affairs, located at 208 Sheridan Hall. The NSE Directory is available soon after the start of the fall semester. This booklet lists all the schools that participate in the NSE and will provide you with some basic information about each school. After you have decided which school(s) you would like to apply for, consult with your academic advisor, departmental advisor, and / or transcript analyst to discuss issues such as course transfers and graduation requirements.
Please read the NSE Directory carefully. It will answer many of your questions. Pay close attention to campus details like which programs are open or closed or have special requirements.
2. Develop a list of schools you'd like to attend. You may choose from any one of the 190 campuses listed in the directory. If the campus is not listed in the directory, you may not attend that school through NSE. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for exchange.
There are two exchange plans, A and B. Plan A allows you to attend another school and pay their in state tuition and fees. Plan B allows you to attend another school but continue to pay your tuition to Fort Hays State University as you would if you were taking classes here. The NSE Directory has a good explanation of both plans. Fort Hays State University is a Plan B school. This means that you can only select campuses that offer Plan B as an alternative. The benefit of Plan B is paying our "affordable success" tuition at colleges and universities that typically have much higher tuition.
3. Attend a group NSE informational session. These sessions are held in the fall--please check the campus master calendar for the date and time. If you missed the group session or cannot make it, you can schedule an individual consultation with the NSE Coordinator, Shana Meyer, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, by calling 785-628-5824.

4. Fill out the NSE application and supporting materials. Applications will be available starting in October. The priority deadline for NSE applications is February 1st! Applications submitted from February 1st through February 16th will be considered on a space available basis. The application fee will also be due at that time. Applications are available from Student Affairs, 208 Sheridan Hall.
When completing your application, please list only the schools you will attend, if placed there. It is best to select several schools as options for exchange. While NSE has a positive track record for placing students, there is a chance your first choice will fill up quickly if it is a popular NSE school. If you mark one school and do not get placed, you will NOT receive a refund. Additionally, if you mark more than one choice and you are placed into one of the schools, and you withdraw because it was not your 1st choice, you will not receive a refund. Therefore, list only the schools you want to go to.
5. Receive news from the Placement Conference! The NSE Coordinators meet every March to place their students. You will receive word about your placement from Shana Meyer shortly after the conference.

6. Prepare for your exchange! The Coordinators from your home campus (FHSU) and host campus will help you prepare for your exchange experience. You'll get assistance with housing, financial aid, academic advising, registration for courses, and more. See Confirmed Outgoing Students for further information.
