Department and University Overview:Fort Hays State University is a regionally accredited institution located in Hays, KS serving students from the Kansas and local states and a large number of international students. Residential Life is committed to partnering with other offices in the Division of Student Affairs on implementing initiatives focused on university priorities including the first year experience, academic support and success, and retention. The Assistant Director will play an integral role in the design and application of these areas. The department is committed to hiring candidates who are innovative, change agents, and focused on professional growth and development. Position Overview:This is a 12-month position. The position is unclassified but not non-tenured. The Assistant Director of Residential Life receives vacation, sick leave and other fringe benefits determined by the FHSU Personnel Office. The Assistant Director of Residential Life reports to the Director of Residential Life. Normal office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., M-F, but the duties sometimes require work outside those normal hours. Duties:The Assistant Director of Residential Life works in conjunction with the Director to develop and implement a comprehensive Residential Life program that is grounded in student success. Specific responsibilities of the Assistant Director help achieve that goal. The Assistant Director assists in the training, supervision and evaluation of professional hall directors, and supports the training, supervision and evaluation of graduate assistants, resident assistants and front desk staff. Oversees hall director collateral assignments, including student staff selection, training, web development, movie channel, and student conduct board. They advise the Residence Hall Association and National Residence Hall Honorary organizations with support of a hall director. In addition, the Assistant Director investigates and responds to concerns and complaints of students, parents and university staff members in a manner that provides accurate information and fosters positive public relations; serves as referral agent to students, faculty and staff; takes part in Division of Student Affairs activities, including division staff meetings, assessment, programs and university committees; provides appropriate training and development of procedures for crisis and risk management to ensure the security and safety of students including participating in an on call rotation and oversight of the student conduct process; participates in Residential Life programs, University visit days, senior recognition programs, and special weekends; represents the Residential Life Office in a professional manner while establishing collaborative relationships with other University offices. The Assistant Director will assume responsibility in the absence of the Director or the Occupancy Specialist and complete other duties as assigned. Education:The Assistant Director of Residential Life must have a master’s degree in higher education administration, student personnel or other closely related field required.Experience:Prior experience with crisis management, advising student organizations, a general understanding of residential life processes and procedures, and three or more years of post-master’s experience required.
