| Step 1 - Apply for Admission to FHSU
through the Office
of Admissions |
- If you are a recent high school graduate or have completed
less than 48 hours, have an official copy of your final
high school transcript forwarded to the FHSU's Registrar's
Office.
- If you received your G.E.D., have official documentation
regarding satisfactory completion on file at the Registrar's
Office.
- If you are a transfer student, have official academic
transcripts sent from all school attended submitted to the
FHSU's Registrar's Office.
- If you are a graduate student, have official transcript(s)
from all previous higher education institutions sent to
the FHSU Graduate School.
|
| Step 2 - Apply for Federal, State, and
Institutional Financial Aid |
- Complete the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
This application is used to determine eligibility for any
Federal or State grants, Federal Work Study, and Federal
Stafford Loans. Remember to include FHSU's Federal Student
Code which is 001915.
- To get specific information regarding applying for aid
for the upcoming award year, visit our Getting
Started page.
- Complete the Kansas Student Aid Application if you qualify
for a State of Kansas or Kansas Minority Scholarship. State
aid is available only to residents of the state of Kansas
who have graduated from a Kansas high school. Priority deadline:
April 1st. Applications are available in FHSU's Scholarship
Office located in Custer Hall.
- Complete Fort Hays State University's Scholarship
Application in order to be eligible
for any institutional scholarships. The priority deadline
for the 2008-2009 academic year is December 15, 2007, and
the final deadline is February 15, 2008.
|
| Step 3 - Review your Student Aid Report
(SAR) |
- A couple of weeks after filing your FAFSA,
you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) at the address
you listed on your application. If you do not receive a
SAR within about 3 to 4 weeks after completing the application,
contact the Federal Processor at (800)433-3243.
- Make sure all information on the SAR is correct.
- If anything on your SAR is incorrect, make changes on
Part 2 and return it to the address of the Federal Processing
Center located on the reverse side of Part 2. You will receive
a new SAR any time corrections are made to your information.
This correction process can take up to 4 weeks.
|
| Step 4 - Complete Verification (if selected
by the Federal Processor) |
- If you are a dependent student (determined by Step 3 on
the FAFSA), complete and submit the Dependent Verification
Worksheet to the Financial Assistance Office. You also need
to turn in a signed copy of your Federal Income Tax Return
from the previous year and a copy of your W-2's. A copy
or your parents' signed Federal Income Tax Return from the
previous year and a copy of their W-2's is also needed.
Note: If you and/or your parents
completed Schedule C or F on the Federal Income Tax Return,
we also need a copy of those.
- If you are an independent student (determined by Step
3 on the FAFSA), complete and submit the Independent Verification
Worksheet to the Financial Aid Office. You also need to
turn in a signed copy of your and your spouse's (if applicable)
Federal Income Tax Return from the previous year as well
as a copy of your and your spouse's (if applicable) W-2's.
Note: If you and/or your spouse
completed Schedule C or F on the Federal Income Tax Return,
we also need a copy of those.
- If you did not file a Federal Income
Tax Return in the previous year, please indicate that on
the Verification Worksheet. If you still worked but did
not file, the Financial Assistance Office still needs copies
of W-2's.
- If you did not work at all during the
previous year, please indicate that on your Verification
Worksheet.
|
| Step 5 - Return your Financial
Aid Award Letter to the Financial Aid Office |
- After the Financial Assistance Office has received all
of your Verification Information or any other missing information
for your FAFSA application, you will be awarded your financial
aid amounts for the year.
- Your award letter will be mailed to the primary address
that you have listed with the Registrar's Office unless
you provided an e-mail address on your FAFSA. Students who
provided an e-mail address will be notified that awards
have been made via an e-mail with a link to the on-line
award letter at Tiger
Tracks. If you will be accessing Tiger Tracks
for the first time, you will need to activate you account
by going to
https://tigertracks.fhsu.edu/register/. After
you have logged on, select the "Online Services"
tab, then the "Finances" link, and then the "Financial
Aid Eligibility" link. Click the "Launch"
button at the prompt. Next, select the award year you wish
to access in the drop-down box at the top of the page. Your
award letter is viewable and printable from your browser
using the "Your Awards" tab. The on-line award
letter must be printed, completed, and returned to the Financial
Assistance Office.
- Once you receive your award letter, you should review
your awards and decide which ones you want to accept and
which ones you want to decline. Make any changes necessary,
sign the award letter, and then return one copy (it's a
good idea to also keep a copy for your own records) to the
Financial Assistance Office as soon as possible. Remember:
Your financial aid cannot be processed until the award letter
has been signed and returned.
|
| Step 6 - Complete a Master Promissory
Note |
- If you accept loans from a bank that you have not previously
borrowed from since Summer of 2001, you will need to sign
a Master Promissory Note (MPN).
- Once you return your Award Letter to the Financial Assistance
Office accepting Federal loans, the lender will be notified
that you have selected them to disburse your loan money.
This lender will then send you a Master Promissory Note
to your primary address. You must review, complete, sign,
and return your MPN to your lender as soon as possible.
- Loan funds cannot be disbursed until the completed MPN
has been received by your lender.
|
| Step 7 - Disbursement of Aid |
- The final step is the actual disbursement of your aid.
The disbursement date varies each semester, but it is typically
a couple of days before the first day of classes. Be sure
to check in with the Financial Assistance Office ahead of
time to make sure nothing is missing with your file in order
to avoid miscommunication and a delay of your funds being
released.
|
| Notice - Important Changes
in Loan Disbursement : |
- As per recent changes in Federal Regulation, all loan
proceeds must be delivered in two equal disbursements. If
you have a single semester loan, you will receive half of
the funds at the beginning of the semester and the remaining
amount after the midpoint of the semester (providing you
are still eligible for the remaining funds).
|
- If you are a freshman student and have not borrowed previously
through the Stafford Loan Program, your loan funds will
be delayed 30 days as per Federal Regulation.
