Important Information for Victims of
Catastrophic Disasters

The Fort Hays State University Financial Assistance Office would like to extend a helping hand for those FHSU students and families affected by the recent severe weather across the state of Kansas. Several communities from Greensburg to Beloit have been severely damaged by tornados while flooding in other communities has also occurred. Federal Aid policies allow for adjustments to Cost of Attendance, income and assets through a process known as Professional Judgment/Special Circumstances.

http://www.finaid.org/educators/pj/naturaldisasters.phtml Finaid.org is a nationally recognized source for help and advice about financial aid matters. This link provides information about the “Loss of Damage of a Primary Residence” and the related federal aid guidance on the subject.

http://www.fhsu.edu/finaid/07-08pjsc.pdf This form is used by the FHSU Financial Assistance Office to collect information on a “case-by-case” basis from any affected students or families. A student should fill out the form and provide a statement regarding the situation along with supporting documentation. Some documentation requirements may be waived in certain circumstances. While the form does not specifically address the subject of natural disasters, our office will make adjustments based on a written statement and the available documentation.
