FHSU works in conjunction with the Department of Veteran's Affairs in certifying appropriate documents for the following educational assistance programs:

IMPORTANT NOTE -- All students who are receiving either Montgomery GI Bill Active duty or Selected Reserve MUST verify their enrollments monthly to receive payments. This verification can be done either by using the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) application or by using the automated telephone system (TVR) at 1-877-823-2378 and following the prompts.

Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (Chapter 30)
The MGIB program provides up to 36 months of education benefits. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty. Chapter 34 (old G.I. Bill) may also be eligible for benefits.

Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 (Chapter 33)

The Post 9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

Reserved Educational Assistance Program--REAP (Chapter 1607)

REAP was established as a part of the Ronald W. Reagan National Defense Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 2005. It is a new Department of Defense education benefit program designed to provide educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation) as declared by the President or Congress. This new program makes certain reservists who were activated for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001, either eligible for education benefits or eligible for increased benefits.

Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606)
The MGIB-SR program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.

Veterans Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 32)
VEAP is available if you first entered active duty between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985 and you elected to make contributions from your military pay to participate in this education benefit program. Your contributions are matched on a $2 for $1 basis by the Government. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.

Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 35)
DEA provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training. If you are a spouse, you may take a correspondence course. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.

Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31)

A veteran or service member pending separation from military service for medical causes, may be eligible for these benefits if he or she incurred or aggravated a service-connected disability on or after September 16, 1940, which entitles him or her to VA disability compensation and who is in need of vocational rehabilitation because the disability causes an employment handicap which has not been overcome by education or training. Vocational rehabilitation services may generally be provided for up to 48 months within a period of 12 years from the date he or she is notified of entitlement to VA disability compensation.

How do I apply for Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30, 1607 or Chapter 1606) educational benefits?
Students who have not previously received benefits through this program, must complete an initial application form 22-1990-VON-App online, and submit it along with the member-4 copy of the dd-214 (disharge papers) to the Department of Veteran's Affairs in St. Louis, MO. In addition, each semester you must complete the FHSU Veteran's class schedule online at www.fhsu.edu/finaid/veterans.shtml. The Department of Veteran's Affairs estimates 60-90 days for the processing of initial applications.

Students who have previously received benefits through this program at another institution are required to submit form 22-1995 (Change in Place Training) at www.gibill.va.gov, along with the FHSU Veteran's class schedule at www.fhsu.edu/finaid/veterans.shtml.

How do I apply for the Post 9/11 Montgomery GI Bill Chapter 33 educational benefits?
Students must complete the form 22-1990-VON-App online, and submit it to the Department of Veteran's Affairs in St. Louis, MO. In addition, each semester you must complete the FHSU Veteran's class schedule online at www.fhsu.edu/finaid/veterans.shtml. If you are utilizing this benefit you must submit a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility, showing your percentage of benefit, to the Financial Assistance Office. The Department of Veteran's Affairs estimates 60-90 days for the processing of initial applications.

Students who have previously received benefits through this program at another institution are required to submit form 22-1995 (Change in Place Training) at www.gibill.va.gov, along with the FHSU Veteran's class schedule at www.fhsu.edu/finaid/veterans.shtml.

How do I apply for Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 35) educational benefits?

Students who have not previously received benefits through this program, must complete an initial application form 22-5490-VON-App online, and submit it to the Department of Veteran's Affairs in St. Louis, MO. In addition, each semester you must complete the FHSU Veteran's class schedule online at www.fhsu.edu/finaid/veterans.shtml. The Department of Veteran's Affairs estimates 60-90 days for the processing of initial applicaitons.

Students who have previously received benefits through this program at another institution are required to submit form 22-5495 (Change in Place of Training) at www.gibill.va.gov, along with the FHSU Veteran's class schedule at www.fhsu.edu/finaid/veterans.shtml.

 
  • Once I am receiving my Educational Benefits through Fort Hays State University, what do I need to do for these to continue?
    For each semester that you would like to use your educational benefits, you must complete a new FHSU Veteran's class schedule and submit this to the Financial Assistance Office.
 
  • I am going to be changing my major, do I need to report this to the Department of Veteran's Affairs?
    No. When you change your major, the Certifying Official will automatically report this change to the Department of Veteran's Affairs.
 
  • Where do I get the forms needed to process my Veteran's educational benefits?
    The FHSU Veteran's class schedule is available online at https://www.fhsu.edu/finaid/vaclass.shtml. The Department of Veteran's Affairs forms can be submitted at http://www.gibill.va.gov/.
 
  • How much will my educational benefit checks be?
    This will vary, and is based on the Chapter that you are receiving benefits through, as well as the number of credit hours that you are enrolled in each semester. To find out what amount you may be eligible for, go to the Department of Veteran's Affairs web site or call
    1-888-442-4551.

Chapter 30 & 1606 Students – You can now submit your Monthly Verification of Enrollment via the internet. Simply go to www.gibill.va.gov/wave/ and follow the directions. You can call 1-877-823-2378 if you do not have access to the internet and do the verification over the phone with the Interactive Voice Response system.
