| Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (Chapter
30) |
| The MGIB program provides up to 36 months of
education benefits. This benefit may be used for degree and
certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job
training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and
refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.
Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your
release from active duty. Chapter 34 (old G.I. Bill) may also
be eligible for benefits. |

| Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve
(Chapter 1606) |
| The MGIB-SR program may be available to you if
you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve
includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve,
Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National
Guard and the Air National Guard. This benefit may be used for
degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job
training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and
refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.

| Veterans Educational Assistance Program
(Chapter 32) |
| VEAP is available if you first entered active
duty between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985 and you elected
to make contributions from your military pay to participate
in this education benefit program. Your contributions are matched
on a $2 for $1 basis by the Government. This benefit may be
used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job
training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and
refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. |

| Survivors' and Dependents' Educational
Assistance Program (Chapter 35) |
| DEA provides education and training opportunities
to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally
disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while
on active duty or as a result of a service related condition.
The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These
benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship,
and on-the-job training. If you are a spouse, you may take a
correspondence course. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses
may be approved under certain circumstances. |

| Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31) |
A veteran or service member pending separation
from military service for medical causes, may be eligible
for these benefits if he or she incurred or aggravated a service-connected
disability on or after September 16, 1940, which entitles
him or her to VA disability compensation and who is in need
of vocational rehabilitation because the disability causes
an employment handicap which has not been overcome by education
or training. Vocational rehabilitation services may generally
be provided for up to 48 months within a period of 12 years
from the date he or she is notified of entitlement to VA disability
compensation.

How do I apply for Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30
or Chapter 1606) educational benefits?
Students who have not previously received benefits through this
program, must complete an initial application, form 22-1990,
and submit this with the member-4 copy of the dd-214 (discharge
papers) and FHSU
Veteran's class schedule to the Financial Assistance
Office. The Department of Veteran's Affairs estimates 60-90
days for the processing of initial applications.
Students who have previously received benefits through this
program at another institution are required to submit form 22-1995
(Change in Place of Training or Change in Program), along with
the FHSU

- Once I am receiving my Educational Benefits
through Fort Hays State University, what do I need to do
for these to continue?
For each semester that you would like to use your educational
benefits, you must complete a new FHSU
Veteran's class schedule and submit this to
the Financial Assistance Office.

- I am going to be changing my major, do I need
to report this to the Department of Veteran's Affairs?
Yes. When you change your major, you must complete form
22-1995 (Change in Program) and submit this to the Financial
Assistance Office. The Certifying Official will then report
this change to the Department of Veteran's Affairs.

- Where do I get the forms needed to process
my Veteran's educational benefits?
The FHSU
Veteran's class schedule is available in the
Financial Assistance Office in Custer Hall. The Department
of Veteran's Affairs forms can be obtained at the Financial
Assistance Office or at www.gibill.va.gov.

- How much will my educational benefit checks
be?
This will vary, and is based on the Chapter that you are
receiving benefits through, as well as the number of credit
hours that you are enrolled in each semester. To find out
what amount you may be eligible for, go to the Department
of Veteran's Affairs web site or call
