Dewey Decimal Classification System
The Dewey Decimal Classification System is a secondary cataloging
system at Forsyth Library. A small portion of the General Collection
is
still cataloged under the Dewey Decimal System. Also, the Juvenile
Collection and the Harsh Reading Room Collection (both located in
the
basement ) are classified under the Dewey Decimal system. The
balance of Forsyth Library's holdings, including the majority of
the
General Collection and all the Reference Collection, are cataloged
under
the Library of Congress Classification System.
A typical Dewey Decimal call number will have three lines. The
first
line contains numbers, and often a decimal point. The numbers to
the
left of the decimal point denote the main subject area of the work,
while
the numbers to the right of the decimal point denote the specific
subject
area of the work. The second line begins with a letter and follows
with
numbers. This line denotes the author of the book. The third line
contains the date of publication of the book.
For example, the call number:
640.7
F593t
1974
640 indicates the broad subject area of the book (Domestic
Economy).
.7 narrows the broad subject area (Home Economics).
F593t represents the author's last name (Henrietta Fleck).
1974 is the date the book was published.
