Homesteading in Sheridan County

Prentice, Noble Lovely. "History of Kansas". Winfield,
KS: E. P. Greer, 1899.
In 1873, Sheridan County was created
by an act of the Kansas Legislature. It was named for General
Philllip H. Sheridan. Its first settler, a buffalo hunter, settled
here in 1872. The county was organized on June 2, 1880, and the
town of Kenneth was named the temporary county seat.
The heritage of the settlers of
Sheridan County is varied. The English settled in the east part
of the county in the early 1880's, while the first German settlement
was in the northwest part of Sheridan County. German and Russian
homesteaders settled in the south part of the county in the 1880's,
and German Lutherans settled in Parnell Township in the north
central part of the county in 1889.
