Library of Congress Classification System
The Library of Congress (LC) Classification System
is the primary cataloging method used at Forsyth Library. The
great majority of General Collection material, as well as all printed
Reference material, is classified under the LC
System. A typical LC call number will have four lines. The first
line contains one, two or letters, and represents
the broad subject area of the book. The second line contains numbers,
and narrows the broad subject area. The
third line contains both letter(s) and numbers, and represents the
author's last name. The fourth line contains the
data of publication for the book.
For example, in the call number:
Z
1006
.H32
1984
Z indicates the broad subject area of the material (Bibliography,
library science).
1006 narrows the broad subject area (Library Science -- Dictionaries).
.H32 represents the author's last name (Leonard Montague Harrod).
1984 is the date the book was published.
