Technical Services
The Technical Services Department is composed
of Acquisitions, which is run by Jean Wesselowski; Cataloging, which is run by Jerry Wilson; and Serials/Electronic Resources, which is
run by Nona Barton.
Acquisitions involves the pre-order searching of all materials
requested for purchase, the ordering of all materials, the receiving
of all materials, and the processing of invoices involving such
purchases. This means working with an untold number of vendors,
operating within state contract guidelines, monitoring all acquisitions
accounts for accuracy, handling problems when the wrong item is
received, finding books which are out-of-print or when the author/title
information is less than correct, etc.
Cataloging involves either the original or copy cataloging of
all materials which will appear on the library shelves in Forsyth
Library. Copy cataloging includes finding the correct record on
OCLC (out of multiple millions of records), determining if any record
is of sufficient quality to be used as a copy cataloging record,
modifying such record to meet FHSU standards, then sending the modified
record to the Online Catalog. Original cataloging involves constructing a MARC
(MAchine Readable Code) record from scratch, following the AACR2
rules (multiple complicated volumes, interpretations of said rules
(more data), then moving the newly created record from (OCLC to
the Online Catalog).
Serials/Electronic Resources involves labeling and relabeling of books
and other materials, mending of books and other materials, preservation
of library materials, processing magazines, books and graduate theses
for binding, series authority work, copy cataloging of series and
serials, and check-in of microforms.
